    “Pre-paid flowers you won’t get (Stay&Love???)”

    We were at this hotel during 2 weeks in August 2019. It was booked in advance - Jan or Feb. We also booked and later paid a bouquet of flowers for 15€, but got nothing in the end. An e-mail was sent to the corporate box, but no answer again.

    “AVOID!!!”

    Many problems during the reservation and not a single answer to the 100 email and phone call from Booking.com and myself, we arrived at the check in to find out our reservation paid for 6 people was made in 2 double bedroom, with no bed to sleep on for 2 people. After 30 minutes of complaints at the reception, I've had an aggression by a handyman and a security guy, all recorded on their CCTV. The police did nothing as being most likely paid. Pointless to mention at this point how badly cleaned the whole hotel is, and how broken with no maintenance the rooms are. Low quality food and only if you're in the first 30 minutes of opening of the restaurants, otherwise you can get only the same overcooked rice for 7 days! Pity because the structure has a huge potential, but the management is totally unable to deal with it

    “Exceeds Expectations”

    Plenty of advice was obtained prior to our trip but we wanted to be close to the beach and to Havana so the choice of Barcelo Solymar was made as it adjoined the Occidental Arenas Blancas. We had some bumps such as getting the wrong room and some a/c leaks but when addressed, the hotel was very accomodating. The superior ocean view room is the way to go! We quickly adapted to a schedule where the meals were looked after first and then we went about the adventures. We found a good variety and quickly determined our favourites. The restaurant staff at Solymar was really very good and we enjoyed the various flowers and birds that were folded and developed from serviettes. These are the things that leave an impression when you are looking for a positive. The two ladies that looked after our rooms, Tania and Damaisy went WAY over the top to make sure the rooms were in top notch shape with the towel fish and birds. Coming back to the room was often the highlight of the day. Some of the "behind the scenes" staff such as Lala, Grety, and "Sheldon" always had a smile or wave to welcome you on your way so we showed up on our last day with coffees for their break! A simple thanks can really travel a long distance. The Arenas Blancas became the "fave" spot and we have to say thanks to Amauri and Mabel at the poolside. Always a smile, a handshake, or a quick lesson in the language! We would go back without a doubt, and yes, we'd take some hot sauce because we know what to expect.

    “Do not expect too much!”

    Stayed there for 3 days, to summarize, we were expecting much more compared to the amount of money we spent. There was many other options, cheaper, but we decided to go to this resort for the sake of getting better services. However, the room was clean, bigger than expected (superior room) but when it comes to other issue, everything was less than expected, hereby a list: - Cleanliness: It would rate it 2/5, the lobby, corridors to rooms, was not clean at all. The restaurant for the food buffet was not clean also, next to our table (at lunch and dinner) there was a salt container broken and was left till the next day. - Food variety: It was acceptable, but make sure that you go early to the buffet, as if you went late, your chances to find food will be less, and sometimes Zero. - Pools: You cannot distinguish between kids pool or adults pool, Kids are everywhere, and the pools are not deep. - Beach: It was the best thing in the resort, away from all the kids noise and relatively clean. - Employees: lets say they are a bit friendly, taking into consideration the amount of people they are dealing with everyday. Important notes: - One elevator was out of service, the other was with no lights inside. - If you have space in your luggage, bring your own towel, changing the towel is complicated there, it is not of the housekeeping job. - DO NOT CHANGE MONEY At the resort, simply they will rip you off. - If you wanna leave from the resort to the airport (Varadero) negotiate the price, its crazy how expensive, and relax, you will not find any help from the resort employees. Conclusion: if you are a couple going there to spend a good time, I wouldn't recommend it, book an adults only resort, at least, at least you will be away from all the kids in the pool.

    “DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE”

    Being my 7th time to Cuba (6th in Varadero) I know what to expect from a Cuban resort. This place was beyond the worst place I've ever stayed. This is barely a 1 star hotel. Everything is falling apart, no toilet seats, no door handles, pool is moldy and the liner is all ripped up and cracking. The food is absolutely terrrrible. The heaters don't actually keep the food hot so you're eating cold food if you don't go as soon as it opens. They only use the cheapest foods. Nothing special to anything they do. Also if you go after it's been open for an hour you're lucky if there's any food left. Every single a la carte restaurant did not have every dish offered on their menu, always out of something. Also went to try the buffet at Arenas Blancas resort and sat a table and watched the table next to me covered table cockroaches, I got up and left my plate there. The service was the absolute worst I have ever seen. If you wanted a glass of water with your meal you had to get up to get a servers attention and when you did they acted like you were inconveniencing them. The front desk service was worse than the restaurants. There would be 5 people standing there and they wouldn't even acknowledge your presence and when they did they never had a solution to any problem. My room was cleaned and the maid took my towels and didnt replace them, I went to the front desk and she said that they would be replaced the next day and they were not. The bars always served the locals before anyone else. They were out of ice at least 3 times a day and were not apologetic about it, simply getting a "no ice" when you ask for it. No orange juice all week long. I'm definitely missing a lot of other issues with this place but these are the ones I'm remembering at the top of my head. The only good thing about this place is the beach and the bartender at the Arenas Blancas pool bar, Jorge. He was amazing all week and I would go out of my way to visit him. Save your money and go somewhere else.
