“Great Visit in Paradise, Barcelo Delivers”

My girlfriend and I traveled to the Barceló Bavaro Beach Resort June 27-July 3, 2017 along with another couple. We booked a Vacation Express package using Swift Air on a charter flight. We really enjoyed this trip and the Barceló property in Punta Cana is beautiful. We enjoyed staying on the adult’s only side and getting the peace and quiet during the day. Then at night you can visit the palace side for the nightlight, great restaurants and the casino. We did very well playing blackjack at the casino! Overall a great trip, it wasn’t perfect but we paid $1,000 per person for six nights which included an upgrade to first class on the fight to PC. For the value it was outstanding. Rooms-We had a basic room. The room itself was modern and very comfortable. Mini Fridge with water and beer. The bed was so comfortable, we slept well all week. The bathroom tub was very outdated. We like the open rain showers like most modern resorts have, the tub and shower combo here is old school, like a best western in the US. The bathroom did have double sinks and lots of room which was nice. We would rate the room a 7 out of 10 because of the bathtub. Service-We had good service all around at the resort. It wasn’t great because we felt like no one really went out of their way to remember our name or make us feel at home. I have been to Punta Cana 6 times and at other resorts the bar staff would remember your name and make you feel at home, I never really experienced that here. However, the bar staff always served us quickly and worked hard, they did their job. Never had to wait long for a drink and that is what matters most. The service in the restaurants was very good. The gentleman at the front desk was good as well. I did take $200 one dollar bills and tipped everyone very well, so keep that in mind. Restaurants-This is where Barceló Bavaro Beach and the Palace excel compared to other all-inclusive resorts I have visited. La Brisa was very nice, you could feel the wind and hear the waves while eating on the beach. Kyoto was also great. We ate on the sushi bar side, we are not hibachi people and the wait was long. The sushi was fresh and the service here was outstanding. No the sushi isn’t as good as a place in the US but very good for an all-inclusive. Our favorite was Chez Gourmet. We could have eaten at this place every night. It rivals a top Restaurant in NYC or Dallas. The Chicken Gordon Bleu was amazing. The tapas Spanish place on the Palace side was also solid. We didn’t have a bad meal. I surprised my girlfriend with a private dinner on the beach one night. What an unbelievable experience. The butler who served our meal was awesome, I wish I could remember his name. This is highly recommended. Beach/Pools-This stretch of Bavaro Beach is beautiful. There is hardly any waves, great for wading. There were always plenty of beach chairs. I wish they had papalas on the beach but they don’t. There was enough palm trees to give me ample shade though. The pool at the Barceló Bavaro Beach is OK. I can’t believe there isn’t a swim up bar on the adult side. This is my biggest complaint about the resort. They have swim up bars on the palace side but they are full with kids. Why wouldn’t you have a swim up bar on the adult side? The weird thing is the pool was built for one with the way the chill out bar is laid out. We really missed the swim up bar experience. Nexus Tours-Our rep at the resort was not great. He kept bugging me to go to the orientation. I have been to Punta Cana six times, I am not wasting one hour at a sales pitch orientation. Also we already had an excursion booked with Hispaniola Aquatic Adventures, which is the best excursion company in Punta Cana. The only thing we needed nexus for was the private round trip transportation that we booked with another couple. Once we skipped the orientation then the rep. on site was rude. I left him two messages telling him that we wanted to ride together to the airport with the other couple we were with. On the day we left he did not set it up right and there were two different Nexus vehicles waiting for us (we both booked round trips). When we told the two drivers we wanted to ride together they started yelling and arguing. The vans were big enough for 8 people. Ridiculous. Honestly as an experienced traveler I am getting tired of the tour companies. Travelers should be able to do what they want on their vacations and shouldn’t have to track down a tour rep. multiple times for a ride home, THIS IS VACATION. Ok rant over. Great trip. We love Punta Cana and the Barceló properties. And Vacation Express is a great value. Going back to PC this June with VE and staying at the Punta Cana Princess All Suites Resort.

    “And I was back again!”

I stayed there last April and as always felt like in paradise. That being said I have 2 booking for 2017 already. The hotel is located at a beautiful beach. The service staff is very attentive. I had 6 couples visiting the hotel based of my recommendation and everyone of them loved it.

    “Just OK”

I traveled with my husband and 2 other couples. We stayed in the premium suites so that we could be more pampered on our childless vacation. There were definitely pros: -The beach/ water is beautiful -The premium lobby was available to us- this was very convenient for snacks -The hydrotherapy part of the spa was available to us and we loved it -The pool area was nice and finding chairs was not difficult And then, unfortunately, the cons: -We really struggled with the concierge to make dinner reservations. We made them for all 4 nights when we arrived. Some options she gave us were not until 10:30 at night! She said I should have called prior to arrival (which I did, but was told that I had to wait until we got there). We did not get to eat at the restaurants that we hoped and certainly didn't get the times we wanted. I spoke with several different people but there attitude was that I was at fault and it wasn't there fault that we didn't have a place to eat dinner! I felt like I was begging her to let us eat dinner. She kept saying that 6 of us were hard to accommodate, but she still couldn't help us when we offered to split up. I don't think that asking to eat dinner is to much to ask! -Three out of 4 restaurants where we were "lucky" enough to get reservation were all French food and not really good. -The steak house served me chicken and pork that were extremely dry and overcooked. The steak was good. -LUKEWARM Draft beer was the only beer option. The daiquiris were too sweet and watered down. -We had small cans of Coors Light in our room fridge and they were always warm and not re-stocked unless we asked -The trash around the pool area was not cleaned up regularly so it ended up being very messy by the end of the night

“Nice place, expansive beach, go if you get a good value!”

This resort was about what I expected for a resort in Punta Cana. It is close to the airport (less than 30 minute drive), which is great. Beach- is huge! The shoreline has to be almost one mile long all within the property, which is nice if you want to do a lot of walking in a safe spot. Just beyond the resort line was some local shopping, did not partake so cant comment, and also just beyond the resort is where you could leave on catamarans, jet skis that kind of thing. There is A LOT of action out in front of the resort, including the dolphin and some other kind of excursion out beyond in the waters, so just a lot of activity in general out in front. *Also no drink service on the beach, which would have been nice. Service- Not as great as some other Caribbean resorts we have been to. We are American and English speaking only so at our own disadvantage, some try to accommodate and some do not. Rooms- are pretty standard. We did try to request things- (3rd floor, away from pool/lobby area) in advance, which did not prove successful. When we got there nothing was available and we decided to wait (almost 3 hours...) for what we wanted, which I was ok with as we went to the buffett and drank in the mean time, but I know this would not please a lot of people if you are picky about special requests/room situations. On a positive note, the A/C was great! Pool- large, nice areas. We did not have to worry about a 'spot' for 6 of us at either the beach or pool during our week there. They did have good service, girls returning for drinks order around here (as there is no swim up bar on the adult side) Food- I thought was great...other than the fact that my husband and I were sick from it 5 out of 7 days. However we were the only 2 in our group of 6 so not sure what the deal was. I would recommend pro-biotics before if you can and bring plenty of pepto!-- That being said this is one of the reasons we will not return to the Dominican versus some of the other places we have been to and not been sick. You will want to make reservations as soon as you get there... I would def try both of the resorts on the adult side (La Brisa and la chez gourmet) and we did the steakhouse, La fuente, and Mexico lindo on the other side. All good, each place had their good and bad dishes, just depending on what you like. Entertainment- Was pretty good at night, as you had the option of the adult side and the Palace side. The Michael Jackson and Cirque shows were good, and we liked the pre-show karoke and variety shows almost more than some of the actual shows sometimes! Overall we had a great time with friends! A TON of walking, as everything is pretty spread out, so if you are looking for something smaller this would not be it. My only hesitation in booking this again would be the fact of how sick I seemed to be from something there!
