    “Beautiful paradise”

The hotel has amazing staff who are willing to help and are super friendly! Plenty of pools with lots of drinks available. The pools are big enough to not be horribly crowded. The beach is beautiful and we enjoyed relaxing. Plenty of great restaurants and lots to do around the resort. Great for couples and family.

    “Amazing Location and Staff”

The staff were great and the resort itself was amazing. Breathtaking views mixed with a ton of activities (or lack of activities). There was what ever you were looking for at this resort. The only thing I would have liked was for the food to be a little better. It was certainly ok, I was never concerned about eating something bad, but there could have been a little better variety.

    “Best vacation experience”

I travel with my 12 year old daughter and I really enjoyed every single day in the resort, the people were so friendly and the food was great. I'm planning to comeback next year with my older daughter again. I recommend this resort to everybody

“Lovely hotel - more than we expected”

You should better highlight how delightfully your large hotel fits into a beautiful and interesting tropical woodland and immediate proximity to the wonderful Xcaret Park. The food in the main dining room was interesting, varied & tasty, and the staff friendly & competent. Rooms comfortable & clean, - and where else would you see monkeys crossing your balcony! Lastly checkout- a pet peeve of mine in so many hotels - A++ to you - ours took all of 30 seconds. Burgess Family Jamaica & Florida

    “A fabulous family holiday!!”

We stayed here for 2 weeks at the end of October beginning of November in 2016. When we arrived at what was 1am our time very exhausted, we had to queue to check in, this didn't bother us too much although it would have been nice to been offered a drink whilst we waited. Upon check in the guy who was serving us informed us that they didn't have a room available that was big enough for the 4 of us, ,y first thought was 'this has been booked for over 6 months how can you not have a room available??' The receptionist explained that they would be giving us a room in the Royal Club for 2 nights until our room was available, this upset me somewhat as it meant we wouldn't be able to fully unpack however we were all tired and hungry so we followed the instructions form the receptionist to meet a golf buggy further down from reception who would then take us to the Royal Club. The lady at the Royal Club (apologies I have forgotten her name) was ever so helpful and polite gave us our Royal Club wristbands informed us where the facilities were and showed us to our room. The room wasn't that big however it did have a lovely bathroom with separate toilet, shower and whirlpool bath. We spent 2 days exploring the resort and found that the beach was the best place in the morning but the pools were better in the afternoon, unfortunately we felt there wasn't enough entertainment for our boys of 11 and 15 and whilst the entertainment team tried their best the lack of facilities at the 'entertainment pool' meant that it didn't get enough people around it to join in with any of the games. My family like to join in with water polo, basketball etc. but unfortunately a lot of the time there weren't enough people for a proper game. As the weeks went on we found this to be because the 'entertainment' pool only had a swim up bar and whilst they did have waiter/ress service it took a long time so the majority of the guests stayed by the other main pool where they could get their own drinks as and when they liked without having to get wet. The weather the first few days wasn't great it rained quite a lot in the afternoons and sometimes into the evening too, because the evening bar where the entertainment was you had to huddle under a table umbrella in order to stay dry. We ate in pretty much all of the restaurants and the food was very nice and the breakfast and lunch buffets had a lot of varied choices but as with all buffets and a 2 week holiday it became a bit monotonous. We found that we didn't need to wait any longer than 20 mins for a table and most nights we were seated straight away. We decided not to book our excursions with our rep after reading other reviews apart from the quadbiking and Cenote tour with ATV Mystic Adventure Playa del Carmen. This was a great trip suitable for young children too, we asked our driver to drop us in Akumel on the way back so that we could swim with the turtles. The driver dropped us off and we headed to the beach ignoring all the men trying to sell us turtle tours, at the beach there was a tourist information hut and the guy there informed us we just needed life jackets that we could rent for $5 for 4 hours from them (we had our own snorkels) he then said to swim out to wear there were groups of people as that is where the turtles were. GREAT advise as he was certainly correct we couldn't believe how many turtles there were! We got a taxi from the official taxi rank to take us back to the hotel which only cost about £20 in English money. We decided to do the same another day get a taxi to take us to Tulum, we negotiated a price with the driver and he gave us his number so that he could come back and collect us. Tulum was wonderful however it was very hot and the kids got hot and bothered so we asked our driver if her could take us back to Akumel so we could have a swim, which he did all in all I think it cost us about £120 for the driver for the day which we split with the other family who we had made friends with at the resort. much cheaper than booking an excursion!. Due to the inconvenience caused by our room not being ready on arrival and us having to pack up on our 2nd day to be moved rooms and be without a room from 12noon until 3pm the hotel gave us complimentary passes into the Xcaret park next door. We spent the day there but were glad we hadn't paid it wasn't worth the money. Our new room felt bigger than the Royal Club but only because the bathroom was so much smaller however we preferred the larger bedroom. We ere also allowed to keep our wristbands that meant we could use the Royal club facilities for the rest of our stay. Occidental doesn't really have enough entertainment for older children, they have the usual little kiddie entertainment and the almost nightly show but other than that nothing to keep the older children occupied, there is a sports bar with a pool table and TVs showing sports but it is for adults only. We did go in there one night for Karaoke but I feel they could have had it open until later for older children to be able to use too. We stayed in Cancun 3 years ago and the resort had a games room and cinema room for the kids this was great, we like to get our children off their electronic appliances and they do like to play so it was really disappointing that Occidental don't offer anything to keep kids occupied in the evenings. All in all a fabulous family holiday with monkeys swinging around your head, would we return here? Probably not but more so because we like to find new places to visit and there wasn't enough entertainment for older children. Pros- Beautiful resort Lovely staff Wonderful location Lovely food Cons- Not enough entertainment for older children No bar at the entertainment pool causing lack of people to join in entertainment Too wet everywhere when raining no where indoors to sit in the evening (other than the reception bar) when it is raining.
