“If you like nature.....you will love this resort!”

This resort is top notch for service and rooms. Meals are always left up to the one eating them and to me, they were fine. Some of the reviews on this site would scare a person from going to this resort. I do not know where they have been in the past, but my group of 10 thought this place was heavenly. We paid extra for the Xcarat Experience and it was worth every penny. Coming and going from the park every day was such a bonus. I love the tunnel over to the park from the beach area, it was awesome. Our room was the standard room and was cleaned daily. The maids sometimes came later in the day which was fine, I had no problem with that. I asked for a few extra items and every day they were there for me. One day there was a major flood in the bathroom from above, I had several people in and out of my room and the mess was cleaned up very professionally and in a most timely manner. The timeshare people did talk to us about their offerings and |I declined both times. They gave me a green band to wear on my arm so that no one else would ask about timeshare to me. No problem. David, Edith and Ismael were fabulous! We had monkeys on our balcony, they loved to eat the bananas from us. So cute to see the wildlife up close. This resort is one of the finest anywhere....not sure where these people that gave bad reviews stayed at! Perhaps they have the wrong hotel. I strongly recommend it. It was our 4th time there and it has done nothing but get better with every visit.

    “Nice but had some issues”

Just returned from a 4 night stay in royal club. I chose this hotel because it is next to the xcaret park and gave us the most flexibility in visiting the park and coming back during the day if we wanted. The positives are beautiful hotel, room and grounds. No skyscrapers. The architechture is beautiful, lots of maintenance going on, most staff are nice. Victor in royal level building and Antonio our housekeeping were great. The room was spic and span. He even changed towels in the evening- which was nice as usually we showered after beach/pool visit. The jungle like setting and animals on property are a nice touch. We enjoyed the mini golf with natural grass too. Shallow beach area felt safe for snorkelling although there was a lot of sea weed. A few negatives which will make us look elsewhere for a next visit 1. the royal level building is at the far corner of the resort so inconvenient to go back and forth from main restaurant area which is bext to lobby which is about a 15-20 min walk. The golf carts are supposed to be available but it is spotty. if you are tired or in a rush, before 9 and after 5 pm it is challenging. Even though on first day we were told for royal level guest separate golf cart service is available , on our third day when we were tired and asked for it we were told it is only till 5 m. Even when we checked around 11 pm on our first day were taken to our room in a golf cart as a "favor". Overall this makes it very inconvenient if you want a quick breakfast or forget something in your room. None of the rooms had an ocean view 2. Buffet was big and pretty. We never left hungry but still limited selection for vegetarian options and the main issue is nothing is labelled. so you might not try something because you don't know what's in it. If you ask a waited or even the maitre'd, they dont know. That said the waiters were nice and hard working bringing you drinks. Again I didn't see any befits of paying for the royal level room because those reserved tables are in a far corner from the buffet. 3. We got a package that included airport transfers. However the fine print says its available in between 8 am and 9 pm. Our flight was rescheduled so we reached at 10 pm. I didn't feel confident if they would come pick us up at the time so I had to book another private transfer at the last moment. Very poor and unreliable customer service regarding transfer. For return they would not schedule thing beforehand. we were told to go to the transfer desk two days before to confirm pick up. We did that , spoke the lady at the desk and got a confirmation voucher, but evening before I get another email from them- can you please tell us if you want to schedule airport transfer! I didnt see that email till next morning and on the day of departure no one showed up. There was an emergency number listed but no one pick up that number. Very frustrating. It is as if the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. My advise is not to use the Barcelo vacations airport transfer service certainly not if you are paying extra for it. 4. Similar lack of information was very common among most staff. you would get conflicting answers- one person would point you this way, when you reached there the person say not here go there and the third person would send you back to the first. you could easily waste an hour trying to find where to rent snorkel equipment at beach! 5. Royal level restaurant is closed for renovation. A so called small area at beach club is temporarily converted to the royal restaurant but it was just too inconvenient to use.

    “November 2017 Family Holiday”

Stayed at the hotel from Nov 8-21st 2017, Upon arrival check in was very quick and efficient we were shown to building 18 and within 15 mins our bags were delivered by the staff. Good points Entertainment Staff were excellent - especially those by the main pool area Rooms - Clean and Comfortable Grounds - Beautiful and well maintained with a lot of wildlife living Bad Points Food - Average at best - we ate in all the restaurants and found the Italian to be the best, although all menus offered little in the way of choice. Timeshare selling - everyone it seemed in the complex was trying to sell us timeshares in the place, started to become annoying in the end. Drink - Average, although you can order certain top brands, Not advised swim up pool was going to be closed until we got to reception, this area includes the fish restaurant and snack bar - so unable to pass comment on these. “Birthday celebratory holiday”

Just recently spent a week at the Occidental. I had read reviews before the visit and was slightly apprehensive as I had booked this as a surprise trip for my husband's 50th birthday but it was amazing. Negatives - the only negatives we would say is that the pool with swim up bar was being renovated and there was a couple of maintenance works going on. Can't be helped but would have been good without. Positives - where do I start? Check in, facilities, staff, room, food were all excellent. We stayed in block 15 which was right next to one of the pools (with great comfy loungers), just a 2 minute walk from the lobby and approx. 5 minute walk to the beach. Beach was amazing too with great bar, staff and the beach restaurant was such a lovely place to sit and have lunch with a nice glass of wine. My husband particularly liked the sports bar in the evening where you could sit and chill in comfy chairs whilst enjoying a drink out of glasses (not plastic cups that you use at the beach). I can't remember staff names but the guy in the sports bar, there was one guy at the beach bar and the lady who predominately served you drinks at the beach were all amazing. We really couldn't understand how anyone could be negative about this hotel, we would definitely recommend (I already have) and we would go back. Thank you Occidental.
