“A pleasant stay at this resort”

This is a resort not simply a hotel. It is huge and in 3 parts. The left and right buildings on the complex are mirror images. The middle building houses the spa, another pool and American style restaurant. This is mainly a Spanish resort, Spanish led and little English is spoken. Punta Umbria town is small and not much to write home about. We travelled with Thomas Cook and stayed during the last week in September and this review is based on our experience. We asked for a quiet room and this was provided, on 3rd floor with a balcony which was nice to sit out on. Fortunately our room was ready on arrival, after a very early morning flight. After check-in we dropped off the luggage and went to breakfast, then went for a sleep to catch up. Check-in can take up to late afternoon before you are allocated a room The hotel was very busy over the week end with Spaniards on week end visits, by th quieted during the week. You are allocated meal times (2 sittings) for lunch and dinner; we had the first sittings at 1.30 and 8pm which suited us. At times depending on the time it tended to be a bit like Butlins, especially at breakfast. The best time to go is when the restaurant first opens. There is plenty of choice, but the food is not served hot, and being buffet style, quickly goes cold. The salad and dessert buffets were lovely. I would have preferred hot rather than warm food. The bar staff were very pleasant and the drinks on the all inclusive basis were very good. The bedroom was comfortable and clean. Public areas were kept clean and tidy. 2 buildings closed during our stay and only our part of the resort was open. Don't think we particularly missed out on much but did not have choice or use of all amenities resort advertises; not an issue for us but other reviews mention this unfavourable. Overall we had a nice stay. No particular complaints, no particular disappointments if you have reasonable expectations. Did not join in the welcome meeting nor go on any trips offered by tour operator.

    “Good But Has Faults”

We don't wish to repeat a recent review test thought summed it up well. As we arrived 25 Sept for one week parts if the hotel were closed - it is a huge complex. This meant just one restaurant in use for us all the time. Food was varied to a point, but our main issue was the warm not hit food all the time. Salads were nice & fresh and there were definitely some nice dishes. However, the hot food was nearly sweats only warm and just about cooked. My wife had a slice of pizza one evening that was not cooked and you could see the dough. Food to us is important and this was our main concern. That said the hotel is in a very nice location and beach area very quiet and close by. It us not an area of Spain we have visited and was very nice. Lovely pool (some tiles near the edge needed cleaning) , plenty of sun beds. Staff all seemed generally friendly. Our room was large and very nice and kept very clean. It was quite a walk to the restaurant, but we did ask in advance fir a quiet room on the top (3rd) floor so cannot complain. Would we return to the area? Yes it was nice. Would we return to the hotel? Not sure as the food was an issue. We met another couple on the same transfer and they stayed at the Barcelo Punta Umbria Mar (across the road) and sounded they had similar thoughts on the food. As an aside we did have an excursion to Seville which was lovely. We managed to book this on the day we arrived with our Thomas Cook rep. She was fairly invisible and useless to Bd honest most of the week. We got caught up in the Monarch airline collapse, but did get home the day as scheduled, but about 4 hours late.

Dear Guest, In Barceló we strongly believe that there is always room for improvement and your comments will assist our team in their continuous efforts aimed at meeting our guests' expectations, therefore we greatly appreciate the time you took out of your day to share your constructive critics. In one hand, we have taken notes about your comments of the food. And it would be a pleasure to tell you that the kitchen department has been already informed about it in order to heat up the warmer to have the food hotter. Thanks for the comment. In the other hand, we are glad to read that you loved the location of the building which is ravishing. Our resort is next to a natural protected spot through where you reach a virgin beach. A place that make you to live a dream stay. Thank you once again for making us your choice hotel and for your constructive critics, we certainly look forward to serving you again and to have the opportunity to exceed your expectations in a not too distant future. Kind regards, Duarte Vasconcelos General Manager Barceló Punta Umbría Beach Resort

    “My accurate review”

We have just returned from our visit. Booked as a package with Thomas Cook including Monarch flights - well one Monarch flight as it turned out. The first thing I must point out is the scale of the hotel. We had an OK room in terms of outlook but it was an accurately checked (fit watchx2) quarter of a mile walk inside the hotel from our room to reception and back. It is all very level but needs to be taken into account for visitors who are less mobile. There is also no assistance with luggage to and from rooms although you can get an airport style trolley to use. The room itself was very spacious with a very large bed possibly 2 x 3ft joined) excellent blackout curtains and efficient air con. The bathroom had a bath with shower over ( again an issue for those with mobility issues or short legs) It also had ants running across the floor - they were also in the bedroom area. The balcony was very small and the chairs were old and had sharp plastic bits that scratched your legs if you sat on them. The pools are very large and the water was cold. It is picture perfect from a distance. However, once you are in the water the top 30 cm or so of tile grouting was black..... the kind of thing that looks as though it needs a good bleaching! The pool's tables we a bit grotty too. In general both in the hotel and in the grounds and surrounding areas there was a lot of visible cleaning going on. The WC facilities in public areas were kept clean. The bars are very busy at times but the spirit measures etc are very generous and most drinks are included on the All Inclusive list- including some cocktails. You can always pick up bottles of water to take to your room or whatever. My biggest disappointment was the food. In the first place we were told that there were 5 restaurants that we could choose from. In actual fact we were allocated one - the italian style everything restaurant. We we also allocated the early sitting - dinner at 8 pm which is later than we prefer. The hot food was only ever 'just cooked' with chicken not always running clear juices and pork cooked pink. It was never kept hot and was always warm. True there was a microwave at the side but that was really intended for reheating baby food so there was nothing to cover a plate of food with. The cold food was always cold, in fact it was the saving grace for me. The breakfast pastry selection was very good and usually quite fresh but the bread was sometimes quite fresh but other times felt as though it had been out all day. The cheese seemed to be out long enough to curl. Sometimes things seemed to reappear the next day too..... The fresh orange juice was fabulous. There was a wine menu in the restaurant but I don't know how you qualified to be able to order from it. Twice we were sitting reading the menu but had it snatched off us by an older waiter who needed a visit to charm school. We were told by the Thomad Cook rep the one time saw her ( more about that on TC review) that we could book a picnic for our breakfast on our final day because we had an early (Monarch) flight. Obviously that became a problem when they went out of business the day before we were due to travel home. As soon as we got our new flight info (during dinner) we went to reception to book our picnic-'sorry kitchen is closed' - that was with another sitting still to go in for dinner (which raises questions not only about temperature of food but how long it is left standing before going on service! Bacteria need standing time at a warm temperature to grow) So for the benefit of future guests - please note you need to order your picnic before 6pm because the kitchen closes then. So...... would I go back - probably not. Would I recommend to friends and family - probably not. Would I go back to Punta Umbria - definitely . The area is beautiful. Would I book with Thomas Cook- only if I won a competition!

Dear Guest, Thank you for your insights following your recent visit. We always look for ways to improve and your comments are crucial to our future success First of all, we would like to clarify that our hotel is a resort, and most of them are quite big to offer what a Resort can do. Also, we own room prepared for disables, which are closed of the restaurants and the reception, in order to offer the quality that is required. We also regret that our buffet couldn´t meet your expectations, mainly because the quality and the diversity of our culinary offer counts to our strengths. We take your comments regarding our cuisine very seriously, because we wish that our gastronomy remains a very special treat for our guests. In the other hand, we are glad to read that you really enjoyed the fresh orange juice. We thought this year our guests needed the best of the best, that is why we decided to offer it, in order to make their wishes true. We also thank you for pointing out the cleanliness of our installations, being fully aware that this is an aspect of primary importance for our guests to feel comfortable in our hotel, our housekeeping staff undertakes a thorough cleaning of our installations and rooms on a daily basis. Thank you once again for making us your choice hotel and for your constructive critics, we certainly look forward to serving you again and to have the opportunity to exceed your expectations in a not too distant future.
