    “Family Trip”

We had a lovely 5 night trip to this resort with our two kids (3 and 6) in a Royal Level Suite. Some of the things we enjoyed the most: - Beach buffet, we ate here for breakfast each day and once for lunch. It was so good and had great variety that we chose this over the Royal Restaurant for breakfast. - Royal restaurant, food was by far the best we had at the resort. - Access to Xcaret, we went everyday for a couple hours. The Unlimited Pass was a great way to experience the park without getting worn out. Tips: - We thought booking the Royal Level was 100% worth the extra money. We were able to book a two room suite (I don't think this is available any place else in the resort) and we had an ocean view. We never had a problem getting chairs at the pool and bar service was great! The restaurant alone is also worth it. - Read other reviews before you go but know what you are booking!! Yes it is not a typical "beach hotel" but if you know that before you book, you won't be disappointed. The lagoon is great, it had crystal clear water and white soft sand but it is really shallow (perfect for little kids).

“Genuine hotel staff/ beautifully preserved nature”

My family loved that the hotel was filled with nature and wildlife. Every hotel employee is polite and friendly, and will ensure you are well cared for during your stay. Our room was cleaned daily, and would come at a later time if the room was occupied. The servers in the restaurants were welcoming and friendly. There are 11 resturants at the hotel, but our favorite was the main buffet, outside of the performance stage. Roman from the main buffet was a great waiter in the evenings, he went above and beyond for our family. Our drinks were never empty and used dishes were taken immediately. Gloria was the sweetest employee at the restaurant. She worked the evening shift also. She was always smiling greeted us by name when she'd see us. She was responsible for sweeping the floors, but our family was delighted to have met her. Guadalupe from the main buffet during the morning shift was also a great waitress. They all definitely made my family want to return to this hotel. We actually didn't want t leave. We will definitely return again, hopefully soon :)

The staff was so fantastic! Especially our concierge Mauricio at building 20. He was so kind and genuine, truly great at his job. Took fantastic care of our family and paid extra special attention to our mom! Thanks Mauricio! Another big thank you to Miguel who we met at the entrance to the Xcaret park. He was so kind to us also, found out it was my moms birthday and made sure our dinner reservation was extra special. He was so friendly he literally brought my mom to tears! She was so grateful, he treated us like VIP. GREAT VACATION!

    “Wildlife, nature and the sea”

During our wonderful two week stay at Occidental Xcaret, my family celebrated my dad’s 60th birthday, and my fiancé and I got engaged. GROUNDS: Grounds at the Occidental Xcaret are simply beautiful. We arrived from a long flight from the UK at night, so our first impression of the hotel was in the dark. Even that was a fantastic first impression as we walked through the tree lined walkways with sparkly lights and a chorus of crickets. During the day the resort is beautiful too. The paths and pools are well maintained and cleaned. The resort is big, but there are shuttle golf carts to take you between places if you don’t want to walk. There are spider monkeys, agouti, coati, deer and lots of birds living wild in the hotel grounds, as well as some in animals in enclosures such as flamingo. The emblematic scarlet macaws are resident in the lobby, and there are iguanas and lots of other species of lizards throughout the property. We all absolutely loved how much wildlife there was in this resort – this was one of the reasons we booked it – and it was even better than we anticipated. As well as the wildlife and plant life, there are several pools and beaches to be enjoyed at this resort. LOCATION: The location of Occidental is fantastic. Located next door to Xcaret park with its own exclusive entrance, you may either walk into the park or take the small boat. Due to this, we visited the park on multiple occasions and were able to visit multiple times a day if we wanted to. Occidental Xcaret is also located close to Xenses and Xplor, with a complimentary shuttle provided by the hotel (although we didn’t realise this and took a cab, but that was pretty cheap). Xel Ha is not far, Playa del Carmen is within easy reach, and day trips to Coba, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Sian Ka’an, Cancun and Cozumel are all possible. The hotel is partnered with a taxi company, so all you need to do is visit the front of the hotel and they will be able to organise a taxi for you to your chosen destination, and they will let you know how much it will cost before the journey starts. FOOD: With multiple restaurants to choose from, there is always something different to eat. We loved the Mexican restaurant, the steak restaurant was seriously tasty, the oriental was good although nothing like the oriental food we are used to. The menu in the seafood restaurant was slightly lacking however, and we didn’t try the Italian. Our personal favourites were the beach restaurant which is open for buffet lunch and dinner, and surprisingly, we loved Paco’s Tacos! We had a few days where after having been out exploring all day, it was great to come back to some quick food and go to sleep after. It was also great to go have a proper table service meal on more relaxed days, and enjoy a buffet when we were feeling hungrier. There is a lot of choice in the buffet restaurants which changes from day to day. There were traditional dishes such as mole and pibil, plus things like battered pork, burgers and fries and casseroles, stews, soups and the like. Breakfast had eggs cooked many ways, sausage, bacon, different types of beans, cold meats, pastries, pancakes, waffles and most other breakfast foods you could imagine. There are cook stations with chefs preparing fresh food that varied each day. One day this was churros with lots of different sauces – these were great! There were lots of options for dessert too, and fresh fruit and fruit juices at each meal. The buffet in the lobby was good too and we ate in both regularly over the course of our stay, but we preferred the one by the beach because we were able to enjoy the views at the same time. I’m not much of an alcohol drinker, but I drank quite a lot of juice. The pineapple juice at this hotel is lovely, and I had it with pretty much every time I ordered a drink. ROOMS: We originally hoped for a higher floor for the chance of getting spider monkeys on our balcony, but ended up with a ground floor room. However much to our surprise this was an even better room as it backed onto the jungle where a huge family of coatis lived. There was a whole troop of adults and youngsters and we them ended up seeing them quite a lot. The room was spacious, with dark furniture and light decor which contrasted beautifully. We had one bed and it was huge! We slept so well in that giant, comfortable bed. The bathroom is great, large with a walk in shower, large sink area and toilet. The only issue with our entire stay was that sometimes the shower fell off the holder on the wall, but we figured this was due to the pressure and just turned the shower off really slowly. The mini bar was included in the all inclusive (or maybe just for Ultimate Xcaret experience guests?) and replenished daily. This was so helpful as we had a constant supply of bottled water to take out with us and drink in the room. Even though we were on the ground floor, we didn’t hear anyone above us once during our whole stay. The rooms must be well sound proofed, as the hotel was solidly booked whilst we were there. ENTERTAINMENT AND AMENITIES: The multiple pools at this resort were well tended, a good temperature, and clean. I felt safe using them and walking around the area with bare feet. The pool bar is good, and the extra saltwater pool is a nice option. The main cove is lovely, but had a slight seaweed problem at the beginning of our stay. However, the staff worked tirelessly to remove this, bag it up and take it away from the visitors. The seaweed that was left attracted lots of fish to eat it, which was interesting to see whilst snorkelling. The seaweed cleared up during our stay and we were able to use the lagoon which was really lovely. There is a second area that is technically not part of the hotel’s property, but is great for swimming – it’s just past the rocks at the end of the beach. Don’t go in if there’s a red or black flag though. The hotel laid on regular entertainment. There were nightly shows, although we didn’t watch any of them. There’s pool volleyball, tennis, giant chess and games, as well as nature trails, animals and more. There are some shops on the property that sell things such as souvenirs, jewellery, clothing, and convenience items, and there is a store where you can buy tickets and tours. You could stay for weeks at this hotel and not run out of things to do. STAFF: All the members of staff that we encountered were friendly, warm and polite and they delivered a top notch service that we were very happy with. The restaurant staff were great, and the staff at the front desk were helpful, especially helping to arrange alternative transport when a tour I had booked didn’t pick me up. After our engagement, my fiancé and I returned to our room to find some chocolate covered strawberries with a congratulations note, which was a lovely touch. OVERALL: We would definitely recommend a stay at the Occidental Xcaret if you are the type of person who enjoys wildlife, nature, relaxation and exploring. There are lots of things to do, or to not do, if so desired. The location was stunning, it was peaceful but we could do activities if we wanted to. The highlight of the resort for us was definitely the wildlife, nature and scenery, and one morning we got up early to see the sun rise from the rocky beach by the Mayan ruins, where we got engaged. It was a beautiful place to do so. This hotel is also perfect for visiting Xcaret, and if you get the Ultimate Xcaret package (which we did) you can visit as many times as you like during your stay.

    “Royal Luxury”

We spent 10 nights in a Royal Level suite and enjoyed every minute. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The Royal Level restaurant provided wonderful meals that were attractively served, and the restaurant has an open-air seating area that views the ocean. All of the restaurants that we tried were able to provide a large number of gluten-free meals and I had no problems with my Celiac disease. There are many varieties of wildlife on the jungle-like grounds of the resort including monkeys, agoutis, koatis and iguanas. The lobby has many pairs of scarlet macaws. And the resort is right next to the Xcaret park that has very nice areas including an amazing aviary, aquarium, botanical garden along with many other animals on display plus water sports and native craftsmen and performances. The only weak point for the Occidental is that the beach looks man-made on a small inlet and isn't as nice as many others on the Rivera Maya. Good beach for kids.
