It’s that time of year. You’re craving some Spanish sun on a pristine stretch of sand lapped by crystalline azure waters. But you’re also itching for the energy, buzz and guaranteed good times that Spain’s cities always provide. It’s a tough choice. Luckily, the country has no shortage of spots that give you the best of both worlds – top-class beach settings alongside bustling towns that offer the finest in culture, cuisine and dynamic urban vibes. We’ve scoured the country to bring you our selection of the best Spanish city breaks with beach.

City and beach breaks: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Las Palmas is the joint capital of the Canary Islands and the archipelago’s biggest city at close to 400,000 inhabitants. Its blend of metropolitan energy, rich history and laid-back beach culture make for one of the best city breaks by the sea – a select few have been in on the secret for years. Wander Vegueta, the cobblestoned old quarter, and Triana, the main shopping street – they’re packed with colonial architecture, tempting tapas bars and inviting boutique shops. After sundown, head to neighbourhoods like Guanarteme and the area around the port for live music, quirky drinking spots and restaurants serving up international flavours.

And lying in the heart of the city during a stay in Las Palmas is Las Canteras beach, a spectacular 3 km stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters widely recognised as one of the best urban beaches in Europe. Blessed with a spring-like climate year-round, it’s protected by a natural reef known locally as La Barra, making it an excellent spot for swimming and snorkelling. At the southern tip (La Cícer), where the reef gives way to open sea, the beach is a magnet for surfers and bodyboarders.

City breaks with beach: Malaga

Millions of visitors to Spain pass through Malaga airport every year, bound for the sun-drenched resorts on the Costa del Sol. But how many make it into Malaga itself? It’s supremely walkable, boasts Moorish fortresses and Roman ruins and is home to some world-class museums. Pair that with great shopping, outdoor dining pretty much year-round and cool rooftop venues for views, vibes and cocktails, plus the verve that comes with a city of over half a million people, and it’s already a winner.

But throw in a host of well-equipped, spotless stretches of sand interconnected by seafront promenades and you have an ideal destination for a city break and beach holiday combined. La Malagueta beach is a stone’s throw from the city centre, making it the most popular choice. Head further east and you’ll find La Caleta; keep going and you’ll be mingling with a progressively more local crowd at Pedregalejo, Baños del Carmen and Playas del Palo. Spend the morning soaking up some rays, maybe catching lunch at one of Malaga’s famous beach bars. Then dive into the city’s vibrant ambience later in the day.

City breaks by the sea: San Sebastián

If San Sebastián didn’t exist, someone would have to invent it. The picture-postcard crescent of La Concha Bay, with lush green Santa Clara Island perched neatly between Mounts Urgull and Igueldo, is about as perfect a seaside town view you can get. And Donostia, as the city is known in Basque, has beaches to match. Whether it’s La Concha itself, neighbouring Ondarreta or surf friendly Zurriola across the Urumea River, these prime strips of golden sand are ideal for strolling, water sports or just laying out your towel and taking in the beauty of the place.

Then there’s the swish bayfront promenade, upscale shopping, a world-renowned food scene lovingly curated by innovative chefs (San Sebastián is thought to have more Michelin stars per square metre than anywhere) and its status as a hub of sculpture, cinema and music. All the ingredients for one of the best city breaks by the sea out there. Do like the locals and roam the charming old town, grazing on pintxos – mouth-watering, bite-size Basque specialities – paired with excellent local wines like txakoli.

City break beach holiday: Cadiz

As one of Spain’s most charismatic coastal cities, a stay in Cadiz ranks among the best city breaks with beaches anywhere. You get thousands of years of history, amazing food and wine, and an altogether more authentic taste of southern Spanish life, neatly packaged into an eminently walkable ancient port town.

Positioned on a narrow peninsula stretching out into the Atlantic, Cadiz is all but surrounded by water. Lose yourself in the narrow streets of old town neighbourhoods like El Pópulo and La Viña, where history, flamenco and carnaval almost drip from the walls. Then admire the splendour of the Cathedral, sipping  local sherry as you savour the finest fish and seafood. Above all, roam where your curiosity takes you; before long you’ll be met by that signature sharp light shimmering off the waves.

You’re never far from the beach in Cadiz

To boot, you have some of the finest city beaches in Europe. La Victoria beach, with its seafront promenade packed with bars and eateries in the new part of town, most resembles your classic holiday destination. This wide, 3 km-long stretch of golden sand is perfect for sunbathing or long, leisurely walks along the shore. Heading towards old Cadiz is Santa María del Mar, a prime surf spot when the winter waves roll in. Then there’s La Caleta, perhaps Cadiz’s most famous beach. This golden crescent on the western end of the old town, guarded by the castles of San Sebastián and Santa Catalina, is infused with inimitable gaditano joie de vivre. The sunsets here are spectacular, and restaurants and nightlife are just a few steps away.

Beautiful coastal cities: Barcelona

Barcelona has long been a fixture among the best European city breaks with beaches. Its credentials speak for themselves: it’s visually captivating, a cultural hub and home to a pulsating nightlife. Not to mention the iconic works of Antoni Gaudí , top-class cuisine and that fusion of history and boho chic found in Barcelona’s old town. Plus, of course, the city sits on the shores of the Mediterranean.

Most visitors on a city break beach holiday head for La Barceloneta. Close to town, it has well-deserved fame as a bustling, sun-soaked playground where urban energy meets coastal charm. It’s well-equipped with excellent amenities and backed by a lively seafront promenade that’s bouncing at almost any time of day or night. Beach bars are on hand for fresh seafood and tapas. For something slightly more serene, Nova Icària beach has a more relaxed, family-oriented and local vibe.

City breaks near the sea: Valencia

For a few years now, Valencia has been quietly establishing itself among the premier Spanish city breaks with beaches. And with good reason, seamlessly blending the sun-soaked Mediterranean lifestyle with rich history, unique culture and fabulous food. It’s also flat, pedestrian-friendly and has an excellent cycle path network, making it a delight to get around.

Settle in and explore Turia Garden, the city’s massive green lung, before passing under the magnificent Porta dels Serrans, a remnant of the city walls, to meander the medieval streets of the Ciutat Vella (Old Town). Marvel at Valencia Cathedral and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed silk exchange. Or for Valencia’s modern side, visit the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. All in the knowledge that wide stretches of powdery sand and a relaxing azure sea are just a 20-minute bike ride away.

Malvarrosa beach is popular with all ages

Las Arenas beach, next to Valencia’s sleek, modern marina, is backed by a lively promenade where restaurants serve up paella and seafood. Move north and you’ll hit Malvarrosa, another vast stretch of fine golden sand and gentle Mediterranean waves popular with all ages. For a wilder slice of stunning coastline, head south of the city to El Saler beach, bordered by protected pine forest and sand dunes.

City breaks near the beach: Palma de Mallorca

The urban travel cognoscenti flock to Palma, the capital of Mallorca and the Balearics, for its heady mix of culture, cuisine and buzzing nightlife. A made-for-exploring historic old town bathed in Mediterranean sunlight make it the cream of coastal city breaks. The sightseeing possibilities are endless: breathtaking Palma Cathedral, beautiful Bellver Castle, august royal palaces and stately homes, the list goes on.

And within easy reach of the sophisticated urban ambience are slices of sand to rival any of Mallorca’s idyllic coastal retreats. Can Pere Antoni is Palma’s long sandy beach with a strong local vibe situated under the gaze of the Cathedral, making it a stunning spot for a scenic swim almost in the heart of the city. Further afield but still in Palma’s orbit are the well-equipped, holiday-oriented Palma Beach and the cove-strewn coast of Illetes, where the pace is more relaxed and there are adults-only hotel options.

City breaks on the coast: Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Back in the Canary Islands, a stay in Santa Cruz de Tenerife merits a place among Spain’s best city and beach breaks. The archipelago’s stylish co-capital enjoys a temperate climate throughout the year, so life is lived outdoors. Plug in to its modern energy as you stroll the compact, walkable city centre, taking in monumental Plaza de España, Rambla de Santa Cruz or a green haven in the heart of the city, Plaza Príncipe de Asturias.

If you coincide with Santa Cruz’s famous carnival, you’ll witness a street party to rival Rio de Janeiro in colour, lavishness and revelry. Foodies, meanwhile, will adore bustling Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África (La Recova) for the fresh local produce and farm-to-table tapas. And be sure to check out Santa Cruz’s Auditorio for world-class concerts and cutting-edge architecture.

When the water calls, hop out to Las Teresitas beach, a palm-fringed golden curve of sand leading to a perfect azure sea just a short car ride from Santa Cruz. A breakwater protects bathers from strong Atlantic currents, creating a dreamy, lagoon-like effect. If you’re feeling more adventurous, head a little further north to Playa de las Gaviotas for black volcanic sand and dramatic cliffs.
