    “Some good, Some bad”

Free wi-fi and and evening beach bar and a staff tune-up would go a long way to wanting us to go back to this resort. Pool bar waiters were very good and also waiters in Caracol. The beds were extremely hard and gave us sore backs. Need more umbrellas around the pools. Need somewhere to get a self serve snack in late evening like fridge with sandwiches and cookies.

    “Family springbreak/ premium Ixtapa suite”

First off, first trip to a resort in Mexico, wasn’t sure how safe I would feel with kids. But amidst the Covid-19 outbreak I felt we needed a getaway! Booked room myself after booking flights last fall. I used FB messenger to arrange our airport transfers. (Which might not have been cheapest, but felt safest that way...none of us speak Spanish) arrived at the resort and I had to ask where a “premier level” guest would check in. Then they showed took us to the lounge and told us to wait in the seating area a while as others funneled in and took the next stop with the only desk clerk. Finally the gentleman working the beverage area noticed I was looking confused and he spoke to clerk about me waiting so long as others took turn after turn. We had requested a suite if available (part of Barcelo club) and we weren’t given o e, but we could pay to upgrade to a king suite and they gave us an extra (very comfortable) cot so both kids had a comfy place of their own. Fridge was stocked daily of snacks/beer/water/soda and Gatorade! When I got sick mid week, dehydrated and didn’t eat enough...the minibar guy would leave more Gatorade in the flavor I liked best! House keeping was amazing! The button system of letting them know when you anted room clean was the BEST! We never had an issue with sand on the floor, though provided slippers kept our feet off the floor anyway. I like a smooth floor, and she was amazing it always sparkled! Will post pics! Pool areas were odd as they weren’t really desperate areas, but resort has limited space. The beach was clean and fun. The pool area activity staff were some of my favorites! Victoria and her male counterpart were a hoot and remembered my kids and made them feel accepted in a situation that they could really speak to anyone! We had fun playing the afternoon games of all sorts. Even won Tshirts! I guess we were there in a lull period and there for food was lacking and choices were minimal, bummer as we were on SB vacation. Glad we paid premium level so we could always go to that lounge and ask for specific food if it wasn’t available on a buffet. There was one gentleman in the lounge on Monday even, Tuesday morning shift and then Wednesday evening shift again....he was my favorite person on site! I never remembered his name and he wasn’t back the rest of the week :( I wanted to give him a shout out, but don’t have his name! He really took care of us and chatted with us often. My birthday was Wednesday and I pamper myself at the spa! Had a Swedish massage with Gabriella and a facial with Yolanda! Both were incredible! It was a great deal compared to back home, but not the cheapest prices compared to people on the beach....but the spa has AC and the beach is hot and loud! Both ladies took good care of me and I was offered tea after the services to relax! I would do that again!! Italian was our favorite ale cart restaurant we ate at. Most familiar food and best service! Ask for the post dinner spiced Mexican coffee! Quite the show and great adult coffee! Other food we liked...steaks were thin but cooked well. The seafood swords at the steak and seafood BBQ were amazing!! The shrimp were to die for! Lunch buffet was very similar daily and nachos and a salad because a staple for me. I don’t venture into raw seafood. French fries were good! The local over crowding once Thursday-Sunday came around was a vacation damper. They were not made to follow rules and were beyond loud and most were rude. I think the resort books the lower level rooms out super cheap last minute and locals know that and full the place. The staff seemed to jus turn heads when they were breaking no kids in pool rules, or coming into the lounge to empty the mini fridge set aside for premier level guests. Water was never restocked after Thursday morning! We asked for a couple bottles late Saturday evening and some were provided. Also all ice machines were shut off Saturday night, my husband had to walk all the way to the bar in his slipper (unknowingly thought he could get ice down our hall) to ask for a bucket of ice! Then the bartender didn’t want to fill the bucket because he had already taken his “suite bracelet” off...it was midnight! Though he had a fancy room ice bucket and the suite slippers on! Sunday check out was lack luster to say the least, no one was working the desk in the premier lounge so we waited at main desk while staff chatted with appeared to be friends staying for the day. When asked for a printed receipt the guy couldn’t get me one. He told me he would works on it. After taking family pictures near the pool, I found Ericka and she could get one printed! Ericka was a sweetheart and tried to help whenever she was around! Gave me a hug and wished me a happy birthday and always knew my name. ( we were only one of two families from America...guessing she knew us all since she helped us a lot!) All in all we would return, I would try and arrive late Sunday and check out Friday....the over running on the weekend really wasn’t pleasurable at all and the vacation could have been shorted instead of that stress added. Would have saved a few hundred dollars and only had great experiences while at the resort! Room...amazing, housekeeping...amazing, game room and activity staff...amazing, spa....amazing! Food, ok...not high quality and lacks choices. drinks just ok. (Unless the premier lounge gentleman made them for me Monday-Wednesday they were great...he cared and recommended options!) premium level...Totally worth it, wouldn’t stay there without it. Learned a lot from Canadian guests we met and had been at the resort for a couple weeks before we arrived! We did walk the street out front of the resort and had gelato! Felt safe. Oh yes....the show....says family friendly, the one we didn’t feel was. We have a 10yr old daughter and 13 yr old son....both felt awkward watching the provocative style of one of the dances especially! She was a blonde and didn’t look like a true dancer there to show art. More of a “show girl” feel.

    “Trip March 12 to 19. 2020 ”

we just got back from our week in Ixtapa staying at Barcelo. Was a good trip but was stressful with the current world situation with covid 19. Barcelo Ixtapa resort was awesome. Clean, pools where nice, beach very walkable, rooms basic but well kept up. Food: Buffets always something to eat as well as the snack bar. Al A Carts: we ate at Japanese Kyoto hummm was ok but don’t expect reg sushi they use cream cheese no seaweed to roll the sushi. Italian: was good service was fantastic Mexican: was ok for me my husband really liked it so depends what you ordered. Also service was great. Staff at this resort where super friendly and very helpful. Just a side note on weekends this resort is full to capacity so garb your beach/pool spot early like 6:30 am. Or go for your tours on the weekends. All in all I would return.

    “5th Mother/Daughter Trip to Mexico (March 1-8, 2020)”

This was our 5th Mother/Daughter trip to Mexico and our first time in Ixtapa and our first time staying at a Barcelo hotel. We have stayed in Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo and have always stayed at a Riu Hotel. Since there are no Riu Hotels in Ixtapa, we had to pick a new to us hotel to stay in and we picked Barcelo Ixtapa. We thought the hotel was very good for the price, but we definitely noticed the differences between Barcelo and Riu hotels. Things we loved about the Barcelo...we loved the location! Just a short ride from the airport and right in the middle of all the other hotels in Ixtapa. A convenience store and flea market right across the street from the hotel and the beach was the most beautiful beach I have ever been to....all sand, no weeds or rocks, no scary jellyfish and I totally felt safe swimming in the ocean. There are just a few beach vendors walking the beach trying to sell you their goods, but not overwhelming in anyway. We felt very safe on the beach. The Barcelo actually has higher end alcohol you can enjoy in your drinks...but I believe you have to have paid to be a premium/vip level in order to get those brands. We were considered premium guests and I was able to have Skyy Vodka in my drink, but was not able to have Grey Goose Vodka? My daughter was drinking Crown Royal all week in her drinks. The Barcelo hotel has waiters who will actually come around the pool and take your drink orders and deliver drinks to you at your lounge chair...that was very nice! There was noticeable security and lifeguards all throughout the hotel/pool...which made me feel very safe! The hotel is very clean! The floors are always being swept and mopped! The rooms are very clean and we always had clean towels in our room! We did the daily noon water aerobics class and loved that! There were plenty of lounge chairs throughout the resort by the pool and down on the beach! Never had a problem getting a place to sit! Things I didn't like: The mini fridge in our room barely kept our drinks cold...I would say they were almost warm...maybe it was just our fridge? We would get ice down the hall to make our drinks in the room cold. I did not like the stones/tiles that they used to pave around the pools...it hurt my barefeet to walk on them...felt like I was walking on gravel! I had to make sure to wear my sandals when walking around the pool and just leave my sandals by the pool when I went in and out. There was a pool bar...but you sit way below the bar and have to look way up to order your drink...maybe they do that to keep the bar top area clean? It just seemed odd to me. The music that was played at the pool was mostly cover songs of popular music...maybe they couldn't get the licensing to play originals? We had a ocean view room with a very very very small balcony...I think all of the rooms that had balconies had this same size balcony...barely enough room for 2 people to sit on and it was triangle shaped! Great view of the ocean and sunset though! The lowest our thermostat would go down to was 22 degrees Celsius which is 71.6 Fahrenheit...which felt a little too warm to me...I would have preferred a cooler room at night. Reservations are required for the specialty restaurants...something that is different than when we stayed at the Riu hotels....just another thing we had to remember to do. We thought the nightly show was in a strange location....you really had to go looking for the show room...it was practically out in the parking lot. We enjoyed the shows...but they have the same singers and the same dancers every night with a different theme every night. We really missed having a large entertainment staff like the Riu hotels have to keep the guests entertained and engaged in fun activities throughout the day and night. Maybe it was because we were not staying during peak time? We did the morning yoga/stretch class every morning at 10am....we liked the class but it was held in the garden on the wet grass? We would have loved to do this class down at the beach or at least be able to look out over the ocean while doing the class. They did provide us with yoga mats and beach towels...but just seemed like a missed opportunity to make it a much better class with a view! We did the Zumba classes a few times but were very disappointed in the the location of this class! It took place in the aisle of a section of green spaces near the pools...the aisle was wide enough for 2 people at most side by side...so if there were a lot of people, you probably were far away from the instructor! I guess they have to do it this way because there really didn't seem to be any other place to do it. We really didn't see any other activities going on other than the ones I mentioned above...again...maybe because we were not staying during peak time. We did watch a cooking demo at the pool and I did see a beer drinking contest happening one day and beach volleyball daily...but would have loved to play water volleyball daily (saw it being played only once during the week we were there), would have loved some salsa dancing lessons poolside...bingo poolside.... I also would have liked to have some boogie boards to use in the ocean provided by the hotel... The food was kinda disappointing for us...not as many selections as they have at the Riu hotels...and the food was kinda hard to access...pans placed too far back and hard to reach the food. In the center of the hotel dining room, the tray of food that would be furthest away was always so hard for me to access...especially because the heat lamps keeping the food warm made the handles way too hot for me to even touch the handles to scoop out some food! I loved being able to order fresh made eggs every morning...but they only had one lady making the eggs...sometimes that line could be really long...wished there was a pan of made scrambled eggs out but I only saw that a couple of the days. I really missed butter! I guess Mexico doesn't use butter...just margarine! Some waiters/waitresses were really good about making sure our water glasses were kept full...but sometimes we never had our water refilled! We had to go looking for our waiter/waitresses for a refill! We did not care for the way the Sunset specialty restaurant was run...they had all their meat laid out uncooked and you picked what you wanted and had them grill it up for you. Then you had to wait and wait and wait by the smoky grills for your meat to cook. I was waiting for my chicken breast and suddenly a lady walks up and they gave her my chicken breast I was waiting for!!!! What the heck? I was not happy at all! I wish I could have sat down and gotten served what I ordered rather than stand there and wait. We also noticed that the staff (check-in, restaurants, entertainment staff, bartenders) know very little English...I realize we are in Mexico and I shouldn't assume that anyone can speak English...but when we have stayed at the Riu hotels, the staff was all very proficient in English so it was just something that we weren't used to. We did enjoy our stay at the Barcelo...but missed staying at a Riu hotel.
