    “Gem of Manzanillo”

Definitely will return to this hotel. Staff friendly, food at the buffet had lots of choice for all liking. The Mexican a la Carte restaurant was not to everyones taste, therefore, read the menu before you book. Went deep see fishing reserved thru the hotel and after 5 hours, we caught a "Rock fish". Nothing not even a bite just got stuck on the bottom. So be careful who you book with. There is a little cove with a beach that was formerly part of the golf course (higher ground). Nice to snorkel but be careful if you walk in the water by the rocks as there is some "See Urchins" and hurt a lot as my wife witnessed it. First aid was available and the hotels doctor was there to remove the quills within 30 mins. The piano bar at night was another +. Both musicians were outstanding. The in and out process was without a hitch. We upgraded our room to the 5th floor with ocean view...worth it. The welcome briefing was outstanding and the briefer says it all. We were there during the city parade and was worth the watch. The town is an import/export business and locals are friendly and no sales pressure noted. We took a cab to town for 120 pesos. All transportation fees to different location are written by the concierge at the entrance of the lobby. Arriving at the airport was a little different as there is not much to offer while waiting for your plane, only vending machine that were empty within 20 mins. So bring your snack and purchase your drinks at the airport like everyone does. Overall, this trip was probably one of the best experience on the west coast of Mexico. This hotel has it all, huge rooms, friendly staff, good food, excellent service to mentioned a few that made our holiday a memorable one. B & P

“Amazing vacation, amazing location, amazing people”

Very highly recommended. Large clean rooms, excellent culinary buffet style food better than the a la carte restaurants. The sport/entertainer director, Christian Diaz, was lively and fun. He was able to get lots of people involved in sports and Kareoke. Our favorite server was Israel, he was able to communicate well with us and met our needs. Also we had grandchildren with us and the kids program director, Carolina, was very well received and the children would just love to go and spend some time with her. Our grandson fell in love with her. The both loved to dance with her on stage. The only downside was that CANADA was not included in the International Evening Show. I would highly recommend this place to everyone.

    “Everyone got sick”

Okay let's be honest here. We stayed at Barcelo for 2 weeks starting Feb 22nd. We should have left the hotel when we entered into our room and a maintenance man had a huge bug sprayer in his hands. Then I slipped on the water from the air conditioner dripping on the floor. Our first a la carte was in the Japanese Restaurant and we asked to be moved because ants were crawling all over our table. The waiter then just used the menu and swept the ants away and set someone else at the table. We asked to change rooms and the only room they would offer was one that cost $90 US more a night for a Premium Package. Since there were bugs and water on the floor we decided to pay the extra money as Karin would not allow us to move without the extra charge. What a complete waste of money. They wouldn't even refund us our Wifi charges we previously purchased because it is free with the Premium package. We got to know a lot of people during our stay from around the pool. Each day fewer and fewer people were at the pool. When I asked someone where they were I was told that they were in their room sick. We have travelled to at least 15 resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean and we have never been sick. I assumed that it was just diarrhea so I never asked for details. Then my spouse got sick. I had no idea how bad the sickness was or how hard it would hit. I went down to the pool and lots of people were in their room sick so I asked some of the people who had started to recover how bad the sickness was for them. A lot of them had called the doctor to their room and so I called the doctor too. This was a sickness from somewhere in the hotel. I take great offense to the comments that the hotel is writing on trip advisor about it being the red tide or that the illness was not from their hotel. Please do not insult our intelligence and take responsibility for the problem in your hotel. Good heavens, the bartender rinsed the dirty glasses in a small sink and reserved more drinks in those questionably clean glasses. We have attempted to contact the manager of Barceló and of course they did not respond to our email. We even used their complaint system and we still didn't get a response. There were many of us who got sick and we only had 3 or 4 drinks a day. It was not from over consumption. This hotels integrity is in question as they left a note by everyone's door stating that the pool would be closed until 9:00 am due to maintenance problems. There were no maintenance problems. They brought in photographers to take pictures of the hotel and they didn't want people or towels on the chairs for their pictures. That was pretty deceitful and everyone who was at the hotel knew that you lied to all of us. If you were willing to lie to us about the pool there is no doubt that you would try to deceive us about the cause of our illnesses. This hotel should at least come clean and pay for all of our doctors bills or reimburse us for our lost holiday time due to illness. As well, you need to train your bartenders as those of us who do not drink very much do not get to know the names of the bartenders. Then when we finally go for a drink then they serve us behind the regulars. On a positive note, the hawks kept the birds from the food area. The guys who controlled the hawks did it in a discreet manner and most of the guests didn't even realize their role. The grounds were pretty clean and the waiters and waitresses were very nice. We have never written a bad review before but if the manager had returned our email from a week ago we would not have written this review.

Dear murster1234; Firstly we would like to thank you for taking the time to share your impressions regarding your recent stay at our Barceló Karmina hotel. It is only through feedback such as yours that we are able to maintain and improve upon the service that we provide to our guests. We have been revising the situation regarding the health issues you experienced during your stay; however after making many tests in food, water, drinks, cups, washing procedures and many other aspects, we have not found any negative results. The cause is not directly from the hotel. We regret this situation; we continue researching to finding the real cause. I kindly ask you to send me your contact information to my e-mail karmina. “Small and comfortable”

So this was our first time in Manzanillo. We usually vacation at resorts around Playa del Carmen so this was new for us. Booked with Sunwing for two weeks at the Barcelona Karmina. As indicated by previous people, checking into the hotel is done at the airport. Airport is small (one runway) and easy to navigate. Travel to the hotel was quick (20 minutes or so). The only problem that arose for some (not us) was that they had moved to a new system for room keys and lots of people's keys did not work when they first got to the hotel. To our problem and we were taken to our room (4209) right away. View from the balcony was wonderful. Rooms are great. Large area with king size bed, a couch and chair, and a table with four chairs. Balcony was a good size and had two chairs and a table. The bathroom was large with two sinks, shower and bathtub. Coffee maker included and fridge was filled daily! The resort is relatively small so you have no problem finding your way around. Our friends were in a room on the opposite side of the resort but because of the size this was not a problem. Beach - well it is really small. However the small cove is really nice to snorkel in. The small beach snack place was ok but we didn't go there much. There are boats coming in and out of the cove fairly regularly because they are taking clients out on tours. This is somewhat annoying but not a reason to stay away. We did not have a problem getting loungers up u till about 10 in the morning. Pools - there are lots and are very nice. Spent some time at the whirlpool (for adults only) as well as the regular pool. The entertainment staff were really good. The water slide looked like lots of fun for the kids. Restaurants - the buffet was good. Nothing wrong with the food that was served. Always could find something. We enjoyed the Japanese and Mexican restaurants. Not impressed with the Italian though. The Italian restaurant was also open for breakfast (good) and lunch (order from the menu). Lobby bar - spent some time here. The piano player was incredible! Tours - we went on the ATV tour, the Eco and Mangrove tour, and a snorkelling tour. Had a blast with the ATVs. Went to the top of one of the mountains (3'000 ft). No view that data from the top because of cloud cover. Had a great time none the less. The Eco and Mangrove tour was very interesting. We were able to release newly hatched turtles. A trip through the Mangrove produced lots of birds and a glimpse of a crocodile. The snorkelling tour left from the beach at the hotel. While the tour was fine, we have snorkelled on the Mayan and Cozumel so it was not as exciting as the other snorkelling we have done. Off the resort - we went to the flea market on Saturday (worth attending). Shopped downtown - reasonable prices. Also went to Walmart for tequila as there is no duty free at the airport. Airport - small! Once rough security there are two vending machines. Make sure you bring something with you if you need to eat! Also make sure you have pesos for the vending machines. Overall, enjoyed Manzanillo and the Barcelona Karmina. If you like smaller resorts this is a great resort. Would be happy to return again.
