Las Fallas: Art, Fire, and Valencian Tradition

The most eagerly awaited time of the year has arrived for Valencians: Las Fallas, a truly special celebration. During these days, the city fills with joy (more than usual!), music, color, and of course, noise—lots of noise. It is a unique tradition in which gunpowder plays a starring role.

Music bands fill the streets, people dance everywhere, and decorative lights illuminate every corner. Churros and hot chocolate stalls appear throughout the city, and on every street rise authentic works of art known as “Ninots.”

It is a week when the city is awake 24 hours a day: Valencia does not sleep because it doesn’t want to miss a single second of this long-awaited moment.

These works of art, the Ninots, are giant papier-mâché monuments representing a year’s worth of work by Fallas artists (yes, there is a profession dedicated exclusively to the Fallas). Through them, satire and social criticism are expressed.

Every year, 800 Fallas monuments are erected in 400 different locations across the city. This event, known as La Plantà, takes place on March 15. Afterwards, they enter a competition in which only one is declared the winner. Finally, on March 19, everything culminates in La Cremà, when these impressive structures are burned, lighting up the sky of Valencia.
