“Nice room, restaurants good, but need more waiters/waitresses at buffets, drink service”

Occidental, please hire more wait staff for buffets bars and drink service! Put in a beach bar. Do some kind of lunch/grill on the beach since your restaurant gets too busy at times. Bottom line, I would come back but only book Royal level again because we didn’t like how busy the lunch and dinner buffets were. Access to La Carreta, priority for booking dinner reservations, having room service, Beach club breakfast, Wifi and the Royal pool are almost essential at this resort. Royal level is great for a romantic couples get away. If not booking Royal level or if you are traveling with a group, then Cozumel Iberostar is my pick where buffets and wait service were better. Way more activities for all ages and seemed like more room to spread out. Remember, Steak in Mexico is different than US. Occidental in general, Pools: Relax pool- only about 30 chairs around the relax pool. Get a chair early or forget about it. It was actually quiet (could have been d/t limited seating?) There was a bar here which had shorter lines, so stop here on the way to the main pool or beach for your drink. Some days the bar here closes at 5pm. Main pool- The bar here serves main pool and beach and characterizes Occidental Cozumel’s main issue -Not enough workers/service for an area. Infrequently saw anyone walking around taking drink orders. Beach- I try to avoid the save beach chairs approach, but it was essential here. The do sell day passes to cruise people. We found the drink wait service very frustrating because there weren’t servers regularly walking around. We weren’t gulping down drinks either. You couldn’t even tip your way to better service. There is no on beach bar, so we walked over to the main pool bar to order. I think during the whole week, we only ordered from beach wait staff 2-3 times. We hardly saw them. Sometimes when they came finally came around we had already walked up to the main pool bar ourselves. Shade: There were no palapas or umbrellas, but maybe you prefer sun. There are a few palm trees. Beach and water are sandy bottom as opposed to Iberostar rocky bottom below waterline. You can snorkel and see a few things. I saw a stingray, big barracuda, colorful fish. There is an area of beach closest to the Beach club that is designated for Royal level, but really anyone grab a chair there. You will have to save chairs like anywhere else on the beach. Royal pool- small. We really liked the shade there and the group hanging out was pleasant. When we first arrived there was a group excitedly discussing politics (ugh!). La Carreta staff might get poolside drinks for you. At check-in the lady said there was no wait service for this pool. This leads me to the next point about the place- inconsistency, which you might be able to work in your favor. If you ask a staff member about something and don’t like the answer, just ask a different one. Dinner: We ate at the buffet one night- selection was small and the restaurant was hot. If you are Royal level, you may not be able to get restaurant dinner reservations for the first few days. Maybe try room service those days. We liked any of the restaurants better than buffet. Our favorite was La Carreta. The salmon was fantastic. Breakfast: Royal level get to eat at the breakfast buffet up at the beach or La Carreta. We liked La Carreta for service, but it was leisurely. We liked breakfast beach buffet for selection and speed. Problem was getting coffee, waters and waited on. Sometimes it wasn’t set up at opening time and we were trying to eat and get over to the dive shop. Next time I will order coffee and mimosa’s from room service before breakfast. Lunch: Beach buffet is open to all at lunch. The place gets full and lines form later. One day the line was over to the main pool. The host/hostess are also servers- just weren’t enough wait staff between seating people and clearing tables, couldn’t get drink refills. Also they had hamburgers and hotdogs outside but you still had to come inside for plates. They didn’t serve lunch that you could just eat out on the beach like Iberostar. If you are Royal level, you can do a leisurely lunch at LaCarreta instead if you want. Shows: Circus, fire, and Mayan shows were really good. There is a club, but it wasn’t very busy the two times I stopped in there. Royal Club check-in felt grueling. We had to pay some extra tax per room we didn’t know about. She went over stuff with us about Royal Club. We went ahead and made our dinner reservations for the week. Where were our welcome drinks? They will golf cart your luggage to and from if you call them ahead of time on morning of check-out. Dive shop Pro Dive on site: Dive guides were good and Safety briefings were better than others in Cozumel. The boats were not overcrowded, most had heads. Hate to complain, but booking dives was unorganized. They did not have my paid dives on record from the main office, so I pulled up the E-mail. They put me on dives that I did not sign up for twice. So if you prepay for a package of dives ahead of time, make sure you check what they have you written in for the next day. You may be on the schedule even if you were taking off days. Not sure why housekeeping puts room service dishes out in the hallway where the Coati rummage through the leftovers. Dishes breaking at 2 am!

    “Favorite vacation ever”

Loved every moment from the greeting at our arrival, easy check in, beautiful rooms, 5 star dining and the most incredible staff. Only thing that would of been nice is fluffier towels and more options on the 24 hour room service.

    “Dive Trip Feb 2/18 - 2/23/2019”

Very comfortable vacation spot. Away from the cruise groups yet close enough to taxi to town and explore the island. The resort was spacious and provide good food, activities and beaches/pools. I must admit, we participated in multiple dives each day and really did not take advantage of all thaty was offered.

    “Royal Club Week”

We just came back from a week at the Royal Club at the Occidental Cozumel. This was our sixth visit there and enjoyed a lovely stay. Barcelo, 5he new owners have made improvements to the grounds, the rooms and the food.....all of which were greatly appreciated. We enjoyed the people working at the resort, several of whom have been there as long as we have been going. Some highlights..... 😍 La Caretta....the Riyal Club restaurant. The food was better, the service was outstanding. We especially appreciated Carlos and Thomas....and the coffee flambé! 😍The pool in the Royal Club. A welcome refuge after a day of snorkeling. 😍 A surprise gift of champagne and sweet treats one evening. 😍 The grounds...beautifully maintained! 😍 Both Los Olivos and Sonora restaurants....we enjoyed good meals in both and were especially impressed with the steaks...the best we have had in Mexico, ever! The food in The Coral was uneven, but very creative. The red wine and blue cheese ice creams were delicious! 😍 The people. I have named a few above, but we also appreciated the bar tenders in the Lobby Bar, the concierges in The Royal Club and the very busy wait staff in the Beach Club. A couple of suggestions..... Keep working on the food. A varied menu in La Caretta would be greatly appreciated....what is there is good, but an alternating menu would make it even better. I know the gift shop is not run by the hotel owners, but the merchandise is very limited and a bit shabby. All in all, we had a lovely week!

“It has been several years since I have been back.”

The resort seems just like it was the last time I was here. Clean, friendly workers and mediocre food. The only place where the food is above mediocre is the Royal club restaurant. As usual, this is a good resort if you want quiet and a decent beach. And if your a diver, you can dive right from the resort. This was my 9th trip to this resort over the last 10 years.
