Gran Canaria, located in the Atlantic, is one of Europe’s most diverse areas for cetaceans. Up to 30 species can be found in these waters, making the archipelago a prime destination for whale and dolphin watching.
The excursion takes place on board a 97-seat catamaran with two decks, departing from Puerto Base in Puerto Rico. For approximately 2.5 hours, we will sail along the south-west coast of the island in search of whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. The vessel is specially designed for this activity and features wide viewing areas as well as underwater observation windows.
The trip is led by Captain Iván López, who has 17 years of experience at the helm of Spirit of the Sea. During the journey, the crew provides information about the species spotted, their habits and behaviour. Passengers can also access additional content via QR code about the different species found in Canary Island waters.
The catamaran is accessible for people with reduced mobility, has toilets and a bar area, and is a smoke-free space. It is also the only boat in Gran Canaria that is a member of the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA). The team collaborates with the University of Las Palmas in collecting scientific data, works with the Wildlife Recovery Centre, and supports circular economy initiatives focused on reusing marine plastics.
On the 13:30 departure, weather permitting, there is a swimming stop in a calm area.
