Gran Canaria is one of Europe’s most diverse areas for cetaceans. Up to 30 species live in or pass through these waters, making the archipelago a remarkable location for whale and dolphin watching in the Atlantic.
The excursion takes place on board the Spirit of the Sea, a 97-seat catamaran with two decks departing from Puerto Base in Puerto Rico. For approximately 2.5 hours, we sail along the south-west coast of the island in search of whales and dolphins in their natural habitat. The vessel is specially designed for this activity and features wide viewing areas as well as underwater observation windows.
The trip is led by Captain Iván López, a certified cetacean-watching professional with 15 years of experience at the helm, together with a specialised crew. Throughout the journey, information is provided about the species spotted, their habits and behaviour. Passengers can also access additional content via QR code about the different types of dolphins and whales found in Canary Island waters.
The catamaran is accessible for people with reduced mobility, has toilets and a bar area, and is a smoke-free space. It is the only boat in Gran Canaria that is a member of the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA). It also collaborates with the University of Las Palmas in the collection of scientific data and with the Wildlife Recovery Centre in rescuing animals affected by nets or marine debris.
On the 13:30 departure, weather permitting, there is a swimming stop in a calm area.
An activity focused on responsible marine wildlife observation, supported by scientific research and a strong environmental commitment.
