The district of Vegueta marks the historical origins of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This guided walking tour, lasting approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, takes you through the city’s founding quarter and explains its role in the conquest of the archipelago.
Declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1973, the old town preserves buildings constructed following the Castilian arrival. In 1478, the troops of Juan Rejón established the Real de Las Palmas here, the first Castilian settlement in the Atlantic, from which the island’s political, religious and administrative organisation was developed.
The itinerary includes the Calle de los Balcones, San Martín Square, Pilar Nuevo Square and the former “Street of the Portuguese”, where the 15th-century San Martín Hospital is located. The tour also follows historic alleyways where the earliest noble residences built after the conquest can still be identified.
The route concludes in Santa Ana Square, one of the city’s most emblematic monumental spaces, beside the House of the Governors or Casa de Colón Museum (admission not included).
An easy-level route, accessible and led by an official local guide, designed to provide context to the capital’s historical heritage.
