Travel back in time to understand the present on a unique guided walking tour through Vegueta, the historic center of Las Palmas.
The Historic Quarter of Vegueta, declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1973, is a true gem that you will discover alongside our professional guides on this pleasant and engaging 90-minute walking tour.
Vegueta was the founding center of the city, the place where in 1478 the troops of the conquistador Juan Rejón established the first military camp, known as the Real de Las Palmas. It took its name from the palm trees that grew in the area and would eventually give the city its name. It was also the first Castilian settlement in the Atlantic, becoming from that moment onward the political, religious, and administrative heart of the island, as well as the point from which the Crown of Castile began the Conquest of the Canary Islands.
We will stroll along Calle de los Balcones, Plaza de San Martín, Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, and the old “street of the Portuguese,” home to the 15th-century San Martín Hospital. We will walk through narrow winding alleys to admire the first noble houses built after the conquest of the island.
Our visit continues at Santa Ana Square, a monumental ensemble of iconic buildings representing the society of the time. We will finish at the House of the Governors, today known as the Casa de Colón Museum (entrance NOT included).
