We will start our guided tour of Bilbao in the Plaza de Santiago, in front of the Cathedral. We will visit the interior of this Bilbao temple, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the Pilgrims' Route to Santiago in 2015, to discover its extraordinary works of sacred art. Among the most outstanding works of art in the cathedral are the chapels of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, Nuestra Señora del Rosario, San Diego de Alcalá and the popular chapel of Cristo del Buen Amor. Also the Alta Mayor, the Cloister with a great legacy to discover.
After visiting the Cathedral, we will enter the old quarter of Bilbao. We will stroll through its famous seven streets, a neighbourhood on the banks of the estuary where traditional taverns and shops contrast with more modern shops. We will arrive at the Mercado de la Ribera, where you can find a wide variety of traditional Basque gastronomic products along with a brief visit to the church of San Antón.
After strolling through the most central streets of the Old Town, such as Calle del Correo, we will reach Plaza Nueva, which, as well as being a perfect example of Roman neoclassical architecture, houses the headquarters of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language. Leaving through one of the arches of the square, we will visit Plaza Unamuno, where a sculpture of this universal writer from Bilbao awaits us.
Once we have learned about the writer's role in Basque culture, we will continue our route through the old quarter until we reach the Paseo del Arenal. Here we will be able to see the Arriaga Theatre on one side and the church of San Nicolás on the other.
