    “Mediocre”

    I’ve visited Barcelo twice. The first time 7 years ago, I considered it one of my favourite destinations. However, I went this year and it’s amazing how a resort can deteriorate over time and staff have lost all enthusiasm. Given, some of the staff are really friendly and remain consistently friendly, while others seem like miserable people and have no problem ruining your day. I had an issue with bugs in my room. They told me they “sprayed” it and I managed to get more bites than before. They eventually gave me another room after having to visit the medical clinic for the bug bites. Look forward to having defects in your room, either the shower door is broken, or the lights are busted. The pillows smelled like somebody’s odour has permanently stained it. The swimming pool looked like the filter has backed up and there was a green layer of who-knows-what floating atop. I’m not sure how manners work there, but people have no problem being in your personal space. There were many guests who brought their own speakers and BLAST their music so loud with no regard for anybody else’s preference. They would even do this at site viewing locations and completely kill the mood, as I did not want to hear blasted Spanish music while visiting a beautiful cave. I had someone stand in front of my room blasting music, as I looked out, they were literally just standing there with a speaker in their hand and chatting with a friend. I’m not sure since when that was a thing where visitors can do whatever they want to alter the environment, but that needs to be reconsidered. Pros: It was a great location for access to the beach and the city. I was thankful for access to Arenas Blancas resort as their pool seemed cleaner. The food didn’t give me a hard time, but be sure to rsvp the restaurants because the food is 10 times better there. They offer a wide range of services and stores that makes it more convenient when you need to exchange money, buy cigarettes, buy souvenirs, or even snacks. My recommendation? It’s bearable if you’re into having an inexpensive trip, but if you don’t mind spending a few hundred extra, you’re better off going somewhere else.

    “Great beach... Everything else is awful!”

    Pros - Location - Beach Cons - awful food - no international alcohol - no swim up bar - dirty swimming pool - uncomfortable mattress and pillows - bed bugs - out dated rooms - no nightly entertainment - rude staff Spend a little bit more and go to a nicer resort. This is by far the worst resort I have ever visited.

    “Great place for the price.”

    Interior super nice. Been there more than 5 times. Never got sick with the food. If theres a issue in a room, they offee a better room. Staff super lovely. Its a nice relaxing place and party for friends.

    “July Visit”

    I don't recommend visiting Cuba in beginning of july, Barcelo Solymar was extremely quite and boring. The stay at the hotel was average. My AC wasn't working, asked reception 5 times before they sent someone out to fix it. Still never got fixed after 7 days. Food in hotel was not good. Don't know why but food outside the resorts are really good but hotel food always seem to suck. Big tip for travelling to cuba, bring your own mayonnaise and ketchup. It is worth it!!!

    “Horrible ”

    Don’t go ! Horrible resort! No maintenance! Rooms extremely standard ( air conditioning not working 2 first days) plus hair dryer and phone not working! No toilet paper!! The worst part is pool aera... dirty empty glasses green pool ! Pool was closed 3 days ... apparently the country don’t provide the hotels with proper equipment ! No veggies at buffet ! Food very standard! Very dirty buffet aera ( nothing to pick food So basically everything was touched with hands by all tourist from bread to cake ! ) Not enought workers in the hotel!! You have to tip for service! Room were done late afternoon ( 3-5 pm ) because short in staff ! The hotel was packed with locals and apparently it’s there fault because they dirty the pool and they steal everything in hotel ! My family is part cuban so its a bit insulting! Would never go back or recommend it ! The beach area is beautiful! The staff was nice ... only good thing about it!
