Description

Barcelona is home to numerous symbols linked to Freemasonry, discreetly displayed across façades, libraries and historic buildings throughout the city. This guided walking tour visits several key locations connected to Masonic lodges and intellectual circles that shaped Barcelona during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The experience begins outside the Arús Public Library, created from the personal collection donated by journalist and playwright Rosendo Arús i Arderiu. Considered one of Barcelona’s most important Masonic cultural references, the library offers insight into the philosophical and social influence these societies once held within the city.

After learning about the origins of the Grand Lodge of Spain, the route continues towards the building now occupied by the Chocolate Museum. Its façade still features symbols such as the square and compass, traditionally associated with ancient guilds and Masonic iconography.

The walk then passes through several historic areas including Santa Maria del Mar Basilica, Pla de Palau square and the Xifré arcades. Architectural details, hidden emblems and references to discreet societies gradually appear among medieval streets and monumental buildings.

Inside the Gothic Quarter, the guide will reveal lesser-known stories connected to Barcelona Cathedral, Casa dels Canonges and other locations where symbolic elements remain hidden in plain sight. The route ends on Portaferrissa street, outside Hostal Fina, after tracing centuries of secret signs woven into the city’s historic centre.
