Experience the evolution of Barcelona through a guided walk that links the city’s Roman and medieval roots with its contemporary architectural identity. This route offers a deeper perspective on how history, politics and urban planning have shaped modern Barcelona.
The tour focuses on the work of Enric Miralles, one of Catalonia’s most influential late twentieth-century architects. Together with Benedetta Tagliabue, he designed the transformation of Santa Caterina Market, a landmark project that brought contemporary architecture into direct conversation with the historic centre.
Over approximately three hours, you will walk through the Gothic Quarter and La Ribera, passing through areas connected to different stages of Barcelona’s history. The route begins near the remains of Roman Barcelona before moving through spaces linked to the Carolingian period, the post-Franco transformation and the urban renewal associated with the Olympic era.
As the walk progresses through squares, narrow streets and public spaces, the experience also reflects on the social and political debates that have influenced the city’s development. One of the final stops is the Forat de la Vergonya, a symbolic location in Barcelona’s recent urban history.
The route concludes outside Santa Caterina Market, where the shapes, textures and colours of Miralles’ design reveal his distinctive architectural language. Standing beneath the market’s flowing roof offers a striking final image of Barcelona’s ability to blend tradition with creative innovation.
