The medieval history of Barcelona is deeply connected to the Jewish community that lived in the city for centuries. This guided walk through the historic Call of Barcelona reveals the cultural, social and economic legacy left by one of the most important Jewish quarters in medieval Spain.
The experience begins at Plaça Sant Jaume, beside the Palau de la Generalitat, before continuing through narrow streets that once formed part of the old Jewish district. Throughout the route, a guide specialised in medieval history will explain how daily life developed within these neighbourhoods and how Jewish and Christian communities coexisted during that period.
Medieval Barcelona had two distinct Jewish quarters: the Call Major, located between Banys Nous, Sant Sever, Bisbe and Call streets, and the Call Menor, near the church of Sant Jaume. As you walk through these streets, you will still find architectural traces and locations linked to some of the city’s most influential Sephardic families.
Along the way, you will hear about historical figures such as Salomón Ben-Adret and Samuel Ha-Sardí, while passing former bathhouses, butcher streets and residences associated with Barcelona’s Jewish heritage. Several preserved landmarks still reflect the importance this community once held within the city.
The route ends back at Plaça Sant Jaume after a walk shaped by centuries of history, tradition and memory. The atmosphere of the Gothic streets and the surviving traces of the former Jewish quarter offer a different perspective on Barcelona’s historic centre.
