Description

Discover Cuenca, one of the most distinctive historic cities in Castilla-La Mancha, on a full-day excursion from Madrid. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city stands out for its dramatic setting between limestone gorges and its remarkable architecture perched above the cliffs.

Your journey begins in central Madrid, where you will board the coach alongside an official guide heading towards Cuenca. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a panoramic route through the Huécar Gorge, travelling beneath the rocky landscape surrounding the old town before reaching the elevated Castle District. From there, a comfortable downhill walking tour will lead you through narrow medieval streets, historic squares and some of the city’s most emblematic monuments.

Along the route, you will see highlights such as San Pedro Church, the Mangana Tower and the Plaza Mayor. The visit continues to the famous Hanging Houses, Cuenca’s most recognisable landmark, dramatically suspended over the gorge. Inside, you will access the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art, home to an outstanding collection featuring works by artists including Chillida, Tàpies, Millares and Zóbel.

After free time for lunch around Plaza Mayor, you may optionally enter the Cathedral of Saint Mary and Saint Julian. Built from the 12th century onwards, it is regarded as one of the earliest Gothic cathedrals in Castile. During the guided visit, you will discover its stained-glass windows, chapels and the striking light that fills the interior spaces.

The experience concludes while crossing the San Pablo Bridge, one of the finest viewpoints overlooking the Hanging Houses and the Huécar Gorge. The final views over Cuenca’s stone façades and rugged landscape create a memorable ending before returning to Madrid.
