Discover one of the most distinctive historic cities in Castilla-La Mancha on this private full-day excursion from Madrid to Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its dramatic setting between deep river gorges. Medieval architecture, panoramic viewpoints and contemporary art come together in a city shaped by both nature and history.
The experience begins at 08:30 am alongside an official guide and private transport throughout the day. After a short stop on the way, the route follows the spectacular Huécar River Gorge, where limestone cliffs and steep landscapes frame the entrance into Cuenca. The panoramic drive reaches the elevated Castle District, one of the most scenic viewpoints overlooking the historic centre.
From there, you will enjoy a gentle downhill walking route through the medieval quarter, discovering historic streets, traditional squares and centuries-old landmarks along the way. The itinerary passes sites such as the Main Square, the Mangana Tower and the impressive Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, regarded as one of the earliest Gothic cathedrals in Castile.
After free time for lunch, the visit continues inside the cathedral with the guide, allowing you to admire its stained-glass windows, chapels and architectural evolution spanning from the 12th century to the Baroque period. Later, you will reach the iconic Hanging Houses, the city’s most recognisable landmark, where the Museum of Spanish Abstract Art displays important works by artists such as Chillida, Tàpies, Saura and Zóbel.
The route concludes by crossing the striking San Pablo Bridge, suspended above the Huécar Gorge and offering some of the most memorable views in Cuenca. Nearby stands the former convent converted into a Parador hotel, where the return journey to Madrid begins.
Stone buildings perched above the cliffs, narrow streets opening onto vast landscapes and the contrast between medieval heritage and modern art give Cuenca a character unlike anywhere else in Spain. The city lingers in the memory through its silence, vertical scenery and ever-changing light.
