Description
Travel through some of Funchal’s most characteristic areas before heading up to Monte, one of Madeira’s best-known districts and home to the island’s famous wicker toboggan rides.
The route begins in the Old Town and passes near the Farmers’ Market, allowing you to see part of the historic centre from the comfort of an open-air tuk tuk. As the journey climbs towards Monte, several stops provide panoramic views over Funchal Bay and the surrounding hills.
Once in Monte, you will have the opportunity to continue the experience aboard the traditional wicker toboggans, a historic form of transport used in Madeira since the 19th century. Guided by the well-known “carreiros”, these wicker basket carts descend the steep streets and remain one of the island’s most iconic attractions.
The tour includes tuk tuk transport to the toboggan departure point and return transport back to central Funchal afterwards. A memorable way to experience Madeira’s traditions while taking in the scenery, history and atmosphere of the island from a completely different perspective.
