Experience some of Madeira’s most authentic culinary traditions through a route focused on family-run producers and regional specialities deeply connected to the island’s heritage. This gastronomic experience takes you to Santo da Serra, a rural village located around 40 minutes from Funchal.
Your first stop will be an artisan dairy producer specialising in traditional Madeiran cheeses made primarily with milk supplied by local farmers. During the visit, you will learn about the history of Requeijão da Madeira, a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) product whose origins date back to the 1950s. You will also hear how this traditional recipe evolved from being prepared in wood-heated iron pans into one of Madeira’s best-known regional products.
Alongside the traditional requeijão, you will sample other specialities produced by the family business, including fresh cheese, soft cheese and sweet passion fruit creations. The tour then continues to a small local bakery where the famous queijadas are made using requeijão, flour and sugar. You will watch part of the preparation process and taste them freshly baked.
The final stop takes place at a cosy tea house overlooking the valley and the Atlantic Ocean. Here you will enjoy herbal infusions prepared with fresh garden herbs, served alongside homemade jams, freshly baked sweet potato bread, artisan pastries and tropical fruits.
An excellent choice for travellers interested in Madeira’s local culture, traditional flavours and lesser-known corners of the island.
