Whale and Dolphin Watching by RIB Boat – Swim with Dolphins

2.5 hours
Bookings are not refundable, all sales are final.

Description

Set out on an Atlantic Ocean adventure and discover the coast of Madeira from the sea while searching for some of the most fascinating marine species that inhabit these waters. During the trip you will enjoy views of the coastline of Funchal and the opportunity to observe wildlife in the open ocean, one of the best areas in Europe for whale and dolphin watching.

After boarding at Funchal Marina and receiving a short safety briefing, we will head out to sea. Throughout the journey, the crew will actively look for signs of marine life while you take in panoramic views of the ocean and Madeira’s dramatic volcanic coastline.

The waters surrounding Madeira are home to a remarkable variety of species. It is common to encounter dolphins, whales and sometimes even sea turtles. Although wildlife sightings always depend on nature, this excursion has an annual average of around 99% of trips with sightings of at least one species of cetacean.

If you choose the “Swim with Dolphins” option, and if the animals’ behaviour allows it in accordance with local wildlife protection regulations, you may have the opportunity to enter the water while holding onto the boat for a short snorkelling experience alongside them. Time in the water usually lasts around 1 to 2 minutes per participant. By law, this activity is only permitted when common dolphins or Atlantic spotted dolphins are present.

After approximately two hours at sea, we will return to Funchal Marina where the excursion comes to an end.

In the unlikely event that no cetaceans are sighted during your trip, you will be invited to join another excursion free of charge within one year (subject to availability and non-transferable).

The boat can also be privately chartered for groups of up to 18 passengers, making it an excellent option for families or friends who prefer a more private experience.

What should you know before you go?

  • This excursion includes searching for cetaceans in their natural habitat, so sightings cannot be guaranteed 100%
  • If no cetaceans are sighted during the excursion, you will be invited to join another trip free of charge within one year (subject to availability and non-transferable)
  • There is an optional add-on to swim with dolphins; the €20 supplement per participant is only paid on site if entering the water is possible
  • Entering the water with dolphins is only permitted by law when common dolphins or Atlantic spotted dolphins are observed
  • There is no fixed minimum age, although the activity is recommended for children aged 6–8 and above
  • The boat is relatively small and each passenger must remain seated during navigation
  • Departure and return take place from Funchal Marina

What to bring?

  • Sun protection and sunglasses
  • A windbreaker or light jacket, as it can be windy at sea and occasional splashes may occur
  • A small bottle of water if you wish to bring one during the trip
