Descripción

The historic streets of Barcelona’s Ribera district preserve centuries of medieval history and architectural heritage. This guided walking tour traces the city’s transformation from the Roman settlement of Barcino into one of the Mediterranean’s most influential medieval trading centres.

The experience begins at Berenguer el Gran square, beside the equestrian statue, where the guide will introduce the Roman origins of Barcelona and explain how the medieval city gradually expanded beyond its ancient walls.

From there, the route follows Argenteria street towards the iconic Santa Maria del Mar Basilica, one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture. The church gained worldwide recognition through the novel The Cathedral of the Sea, which narrates the story surrounding its construction during the 14th century.

The walk continues past Santa Maria street and the historic Fossar de les Moreres, a memorial space dedicated to those who defended Barcelona during the siege of 1714. Nearby, the elegant Passeig del Born recalls the commercial and social importance this area once held during medieval times.

Further along, the route reaches Montcada street, famous for its aristocratic palaces and preserved medieval buildings. Here you will see the exterior of the Picasso Museum as well as architectural details of the Palau Dalmases, one of Barcelona’s most representative Gothic civil buildings.

The final part of the tour visits the exterior of the Marcús Chapel, connected to the charitable foundations established by merchant Bernat Marcús during the 12th century. Stone alleyways, quiet squares and centuries-old façades create an atmosphere that still reflects the medieval character of the old city.
