“Fun environment, great beach - hotel was average”

Came with a group of friends for a fun all inclusive vacation. We have been to Cuba before and know what to expect when it comes to the hotel. If you are looking for a fun resort for partying, then this is it. The beach is beautiful and atmosphere is great. Unfortunately that's about it. The hotel is very rundown. It is well known that one does not go to Cuba for good food. We had to wait multiple times to find a seat. The hotel looked well kept on the outside but lots of work was required on interior. I suggest booking a 5 star hotel over this, as this did not feel like a 4 star hotel at all. If you don't care about the hotel, food, service and want a beautiful place to party and beach, then you should be fine.

Dear Jasonv8910, Thank you so much for taking the time to share your most recent experience with us. Please accept my sincere apologies for not meeting your hotel expectations as well as for the issues you experienced. In the days during your visit the resort was at a 100% occupancy, and actually for all summer ( July and August). We are experiencing here at Barceló Solymar Arenas Blancas a very successful summer in terms of having the hotel fully reserved, and the vast amount of satisfied guests that we have hosted. Regarding the Resort, we are working on the bungalows renovation taking place at this moment. Hopefully you will give us another opportunity to take care of you and show you we really care for all our guests and their experience. We hope that you enjoyed Varadero as a destination and that you will come back one day to its friendliness and charm. Sincerely, Juan Marqués General Manager

“Great location but a little tired (the hotel, not me)”

Barcelo Solymar is right on the beach and has vast grounds. The swimming pools and gardens are well maintained and the areas are clean. Rooms are OK we were given a double room above the restaurant and pool instead of a chalet type bungalow due to over booking! They did manage to move us after one night. The bars are good but the restaurants aren't great if I'm going ti be honest. You have to book for certain restaurants too - we came late Friday night and couldn't book any tables until the Tuesday - so had to push and shove at the buffet style meals with everyone else. Overall it was a good place to stay.

    “An honest review.”

I came to stay at this resort with my friends and we were looking for a resort destination that all of us could afford and enjoy. While we did have a great time, there are a few talking points for sure. Beach: I'll start here - probably the best part of the whole experience. I know this is known, but I'll reiterate how amazing the beach and ocean was. Definitely a lot of space and options for relaxing (although a few of the beaches umbrella tikis could definitely use some repair). The water was amazing, the beach was great and the sand was nice and clean. My only concern, although this is not with the beach directly, is that my bag was stolen while I was on the beach. I know I'm responsible for my personal belongings, but knowing that there is scum out there to ruin someone's vacation by stealing their personal belongings did not add to the experience. Although I know the beach is a public space, the staff and security offered absolutely NO help in trying to recover (or suggestions for recovering) my stolen belongings (aside from a unconcerned shrug of the shoulders to brush off my situation). Rooms: Although I had no issues with my room, despite the washroom door that would never close (and the broken TV although I didn't go to Cuba for the TV), my friends had less than pleasant experiences with stains on their sheets and bugs on the ceiling. The resort however was able to accommodate their request for a new room (twice) which isn't something that should happen when on vacation. The AC definitely worked, which was a welcome feeling after a long day of excursions or on the beach. There were a few days where our bath towels were not fully restocked, and when we asked the front desk for towels, they told us they would "put in on their report." I'm not sure what that meant, but we never got the towels. Overall, my room experience was definitely not the worst (as I've seen from other reviews), but there are definitely a few opportunities. Food: The food was sub par. I would not recommend visiting the a la carte restaurants as the food is either not enough or just not very good (or sometimes a mixture of both). While the buffet food was not to die for, it was still good enough to get us through the week and I definitely recommend going to the buffet as close as possible to when the meal time starts. As you get further into the meal time, the quality of the food severely decreases and so it might be wise to get an early jump on the buffet. The staff however was extremely pleasant and friendly and always there to help you out with whatever need you had. They definitely made the experience more enjoyable. Bars: The bar staff and bartenders were always extremely friendly and easygoing. I had no issues with the bars or the drinks. Overall, a great experience here. Overall: All in all, my experience was enjoyable. I definitely had a good time with my friends and there was definitely a wide range of people (young and older) who seemed to be having a good time as well. While there definitely are some major opportunities for this resort moving forward, we can only see if they listen to our words.

    “Better than I expected”

I have stayed in Barceló resorts before, but my expectations were lower since it was in Cuba. It met my expectations, but also wasn't as bad as I thought. The room was very big. No problems with hot water. Had mini fridge (stocked daily with Cuban beer and soda), big bathroom, balcony, two double beds (beds were extremely hard and uncomfortable. They were so low and hard I thought I was sleeping on a box spring. But I wasn't going to paradise to sleep. The beach was amazing, the pools big and clean. I did not even know the resort extended to another part until my last day. The resort is pretty big and they are building a new addition next door to the east side. The food was great. Only ate at the buffet daily because I did not take jeans or pants to eat at the few provided restaurants (Italian, seafood..). They had nightly activities and events, but nothing like the ones in Dominican Republic or Mexico caliber. But staff was amazingly nice. Very well educated. I speak English and Spanish, but the staff knew both and the front main desk knew several (in which I was very impressed). Most of the tourist were Italian or French Canadian. Everyone very pleasant. Overall enjoyed my time here and the beach is untouched crystal clear beautiful. Also the staff was very friendly to find me transportation when needed back to Havana Airport or Havana.

    “Definitely Not a Four-Star Resort”

I understand that 5 stars in Cuba is not the same as 5 stars in the Western world, but this resort is by no standards whatsoever 4 stars! Arenas Blancas is horrendous - outdated/worn out rooms, extremely noisy air conditioning, moldy smell in rooms, black mold in air conditioning vents, no air conditioning at the restaurant so it is literally like a sauna, no ice at the bar, no bottled water available anywhere, and a huuugeee priority given to locals. We immediately complained and were ready to request a different hotel, but the manager was kind enough to move us to Solymar which was definitely more decent but still outdated. Airconditoning in the whole hotel would die on a daily basis - luckily only for a few hours. Our fridge was not stacked with water on a regular basis - we practically had to beg for it and would always only be given only 1 bottle per room. The restaurant was very busy, with the staff very overworker and treated poorly by their superiors. Front desk staff could use better customer service and people skills, not to mention the sales ladies at souvenier gift shops who are anything but attentive or even interested. Waaaay too many younger party crowds who would drink, smoke pot and yell profanities at the pool all night long, sometimes literally until 6 AM. The exterior/complex is nice - fairly well maintained and cleaned regularly but why these crowds are allowed to throw around plastic cups, shower themselves with beer only because it's "free"/all-inclusive and throw cigarette buds and ash into the swimming pool is a huge shortcoming of management. This hotel will definitely have to invest in interior updates and perhaps some management and customer service lessons for the staff if it is to remain competing with the rest of the resorts in the country. Some people stayed at Barcelo for the first time in Cuba and what a shame that this was their initial impression of the country as a whole, when Cuba and Cubans have so much to offer. Do yourself a favour and book a decent, 5-star resort instead. I definitely would not recommend Barcelo to anyone.
