AMI Programme

 Versión en Español

Introduction
In 1995, with the aim of providing free medical and healthcare assistance for the most needy and neglected communities in the countries of Central America and the Caribbean, the Barceló Foundation created its International Medical-Aid Programme (PROGRAMA DE AYUDA MÉDICA INTERNACIONAL – AMI).
Since then, large numbers of people (over 359,000) in countries such as Guatemala, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Honduras have been given access to proper healthcare assistance thanks to the Barceló Foundation, including the chance to have surgical operations performed, a possibility that almost certainly would not have been open to them otherwise.
Operations were arranged for over 6,500 people, and 19,200 kilos of medicines were sent out, along with some 6,500 kilos of medical materials and equipment.
o
Numbers of people cared for, by countries:
GUATEMALA: 121.815
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: 92.276
NICARAGUA: 83.255
HONDURAS: 53.482
OTHER COUNTRIES: 8.111
o
Over the last few years and thanks to the cooperation of the Barceló Foundation, 10 children have been sent over to Spain from Guatemala for surgical operations in our country to remedy serious medical conditions that would otherwise have put their lives at risk.
The opening of the new Buen Pastor Clinic in October 2004 in San Pedro La Laguna, beside lake Atitlán, was made possible by the financial contribution made by the Barceló Foundation.
Aims
The aims of the AMI Programme are as follows:
To make better healthcare assistance available to the most needy and impoverished population groups, and to administer free of charge the medicines needed for treating the various illnesses they suffer.
To supply medical equipment to the healthcare facilities involved in the cooperation work, both in the form of direct contributions from the Foundation and in the form of donations channelled through the Foundation como con donaciones captadas por la misma.
To provide physical maintenance for the rural health centres and health posts that have been rehabilitated over the years by the Foundation, they being located in areas poorly covered by the local health system.
To pursue the educational work arranged by the various healthcare professionals involved in the AMI Programme by means of classes, meetings and clinical sessions for the local medical practitioners, thereby giving those practitioners better professional training.
Voluntary Service
If you are a medical practitioner keen to help in building a better world, you are invited to submit your projects to us or to offer us your personal services for our AMI Programme.
We need doctors willing to work or to help out in the countries in which the Foundation runs its AMI Programme.
