Regional Information

Cuernavaca - Colonia Lomas del Mirador - Mexico

Cuernavaca is a small town located only 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Mexican capital. It is known as the city of eternal spring, thanks to its lush vegetation, the wide variety of flowers that grow in the area, the tranquility of its streets and people and its magnificent climate, warm almost all year round.
Cuernavaca is also famous for its gardens, the most beautiful of all being Jardin Borda. The name of Cuernavaca is dervied from the language of the Nahua tribes who lived in the area before the arrival of Hernán Cortés. It comes from the word "Cuauhnáhuac", meaning "among groves".
Places to See
Xcaret. An ecological park, ideal for scuba divers and nature lovers thanks to its magnificent underground rivers, beautiful beaches and variety of fauna. When evening falls, see the spectacular Mayan and Mexican shows.
Xel-Ha.Located on a small cliff overlooking the sea, Tullum was the only walled city built by the Mayans. Although Xel-Ha is a natural park with many attractions you can still enjoy activities such as swimming or scuba diving.
Chichén Ítza. This mysterious city was once a Mayan commercial center. A pyramid, an observatory and a ball court remain as evidence of their legacy.
Riveria Maya. Just a 45 minutes' drive on the highway from Cancun are a handful of typical fishing villages and various tourist centers such as the Barceló Riviera Maya Beach Resort, located on the best beach in the area.
Gastronomy
Mexican cuisine is one of the most delicious and varied in the world. Tortas (flour tortilla wraps) form the basis of its gastronomy, highlights of which include grilled meats with spicy sauces, salads, legumes and a wide variety of luscious fruits.
Octopus, squid and shrimp, marinated in lemon, grilled, fried in bread-crumbs or served in sauce, as well as flavorful freshly-caught lobsters in the coastal regions, are other delicious examples of the country's cuisine.
Cuernavaca's cuisine is also varied. Its many restaurants -both in the city center and in the suburbs- serve authentic Mexican cuisine in attractive settings.
Shopping
Genuine marvels of traditional craftsmanship can be found in Mexico, made from ceramics, copper, leather, fabric and macramé.
