Regional Information
Tenerife - Puerto Santiago - Canary Islands
Lying to the south-west of Spain and the north-west of the African continent, the Canary archipelago is made up of seven islands.
The island of Tenerife is the largest in the Canarian archipelago. A mountain range crosses the island, in the center of which is the giant crater of Las Cañadas del Teide, over 2,000 meters above sea level, which forms a stunning Natural Park. To the north rises the peak of Mount Teide which, at 3,718 meters above sea level, is the highest mountain on Spanish territory.
Tenerife offers extensive green mountains of pine forest, vast banana plantations and fields carpeted in spring with poinsettias. The coastline is a series of breathtaking cliffs, contrasting with beautiful beaches of fine sand and transparent waters.

Places to See
Teide National Park . One of the most interesting tours on the island is a visit to Mount Teide, the highest peak on Spanish territory, and the spectacular 80-kilometer-circumference crater and volcanic landscape of Las Cañadas where the lava has taken on all manners of capricious formations.
Los Gigantes cliffs. Exceptionally beautiful scenery on the Costa Cortada of Santiago del Teide.
Garachico. A uniquely attractive historic village which has a small port, a black-sand beach and lovely natural swimming pools.
La Laguna. This historic university city was once the capital of the island when Santa Cruz was merely its port.
La Orotava. This is probably the most breathtaking landscape on the island. A stunningly beautiful city adorned with spacious gardens and stately houses with the teak balconies so typical of the Canary Islands. Noteworthy amongst these are the Casas de los Balcones, two old mansions dating from the 18th century.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The capital of the island boasts numerous gardens, such as the García Sanabria Park, lively streets and squares bustling with visitors, churches and palaces and a very attractive port in the center of the bay.
Gastronomy
Fish is one of the fundamental ingredients of the island's gastronomy, giving rise to very traditional dishes such as wreckfish with shrimp, dentex, comber-fish with almonds, dried shark-meat and meager-fish cannelloni.
Meat also has a privileged place in the Tenerife's cuisine. Some of the most representative dishes of the island are rabbit in "salmorejo" sauce, "baifo en adobo" (marinated roast goat), roast chicken in banana cream and chicken giblets Guimanero-style.
The "papas arrugadas" (literally, wrinkly potatoes) are very characteristic of the whole region and are served with spicy "mojo picón", a pungent mixture of olive oil and spices.
Some of the most typical desserts of the island are "frangollo" (toasted maize and dried fruits), "quesillo" (Canarian-style crème caramel) and "bienmesabe" made from honey and almonds.
The island has a great variety of restaurants offering not only traditional Canarian cuisine but also a whole range of international dishes.
Shopping
Canarian crafts are unique in Spain, with baskets made from banana leaves, hand-embroidered silks, knives with elaborately encrusted handles of bone and horn, ceramics and musical instruments such as drums and guitars, known locally as "timples canarios".
It is worth noting that Tenerife produces a sweet rum known as Ron Miel (honey rum) which proves extremely popular with all who sample it.
The main shopping streets in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are Alfonso Betancourt and Castillo.
Different Craft Fairs are held all over the island during the summer months which are well worth visiting due to the wide variety of high quality of products. The most popular are those held in Orotava in June, La Laguna and Santiago del Teide, in July and in Garachico in August.
