Aranjuez is shaped by the historical and artistic heritage of its old district and its royal palaces and gardens beside the Tagus river.
The outlook of the Enlightenment as applied to the urban development of cities here finds expression in a balanced relationship between nature and man, between natural watercourses and the design of the gardens, and between the forest and the city’s palatial architecture. That is why the UNESCO bestowed Cultural Landscape status on Aranjuez in 2001..
Among the cultural events awaiting visitors in this city in the province of Madrid are its Strawberry Train or Tren de la Fresa and its Fiestas del Motín celebrating a popular revolt, which are distinguished by National Tourist Interest status.

Casa del Labrador. This “Farm Labourer’s House” was built in the time of Carlos IV on the site of a modest labourer’s house located in the gardens of Aranjuez Palace on the banks of the Tagus. The San Pascual Convent Built as a Franciscan convent in the time of Carlos III between 1765 and 1770, it was designed by Francisco Sabatini, and has a neo-classical façade set off by two towers. An array of columns and pillars topped by a pediment are its most prominent feature, along with the church and its nave’s Latin-cross ground plan and chapels, and the convent premises. The church’s high altar has a painting by Antonio Rafael Mengs.
The San Antonio Church. This church was intended to be used as a royal chapel, and it was based on an Oratory built for Felipe IV. It was designed by the architects Isidro González Velázquez and Santiago Bonavía in the eighteenth century. It is given form by the curves and counter-curves that grace its arcade system. It is circular in form, highlighting the dome above. The Italian influence is very much in evidence in this building.
