An ideal base for exploring North Yorkshire, Harrogate offers sophistication and style. Historically the spa town was a fashionable place for the Victorian elite to visit, and today Harrogate's buildings remain a superb demonstration of period architecture. The town lives up to its international reputation as one of the most attractive areas in Britain with the superb Montpellier Gardens that burst with colour each year. For the style conscious take a trip through the splendid shopping arcades selling antiques and designer clothes.
The Turkish Baths make a wonderful visit - with massage, saunas and steam rooms and general relaxation on offer. Other famous attractions are The Pump Rooms and Betty's Tea Rooms.

Only a short drive away are some beautiful market towns and countryside such as Ripon and Pately Bridge to the north and west of Harrogate, with Fountain's Abbey close by. For larger towns take a trip to historic York with the Jorvik Viking Museum, Minster and castle. Or visit Leeds with its extensive shopping areas and nightlife. Harrogate also hosts the annual Great Yorkshire Show in the summer, including market stalls and livestock competitions.

Harewood House, home to the Queen's cousin, the Earl of Harewood, provides a wonderful day out for all the family. The House, with its outstanding art collections, splendid State Rooms and fascinating 'Below Stairs' exhibition, is set in spectacular grounds, which include formal gardens and gentle woodland walks. A visit to Harewood offers the opportunity to marvel at the collections in the House, explore the Gardens and Bird Garden, take a boat trip across the lake, while youngsters can enjoy the challenge and excitement of the Adventure Playground! With an extensive programme of events and exhibitions, Harewood offers something for all.

NORTH YORKSHIRE

The largest county in England offers plenty of things to do. Visit Mother Shipton's Cave, or go underground at the Stump Cross Caverns in the Yorkshire Dales. Nearby is Wetherby and Ripon racecourses, or to the west is Skipton with its famous castle.
